  • California: Flu deaths up dramatically

Flu deaths are up dramatically in California this year, and public-health officials are blaming the severe flu season on the predominance of H1N1, also known as swine flu.

Ninety-five people statewide have died of flu-related causes since the season began in October, compared with nine at the same point during the 2012-13 flu season. Another 51 deaths are being investigated and are believed to be associated with the flu, Gil Chavez, the state epidemiologist, said in a teleconference Friday, Jan. 24.

Many other people with the flu have been hospitalized. In the first 23 days of January, Riverside County has counted 30 people with a severe case of the flu, said Barbara Cole, director of disease control for the county Department of Public Health. In the same period last year, there were two people.
