The influenza virus that has been spreading across the country continues to make its presence felt locally, with Merced County recording two flu-related deaths.
In addition to the two deaths, the Merced County Public Health Department reported one adult patient has been hospitalized in an intensive care unit for the H1N1 flu virus.
Both the fatalities were adults who had underlying health issues, according to the public health department.
Stanislaus County has recorded three flu-related deaths, two of whom lived in the county. The third was from another area, but hospitalized in Stanislaus County.

A rise of inmates with fever and flu symptoms is pushing what an official called routine efforts to keep influenza from spreading at Todd Road Jail in Santa Paula.
Capt. John Miller, facility manager of the 800-inmate county-run jail, said about 20 of 250 inmates in the site?s female housing unit were showing flu symptoms. He said three men also came down with symptoms over the weekend...

Flu a factor in woman's death in Santa Barbara County
Flu is one of the causes that led to the death of a woman in her 20s in Santa Barbara County recently, according to public health officials there.
They say the woman died within the last few days, but no other information about the woman or her illness has been released...
A female resident of Santa Barbara County in her 20's died due to complications related to influenza during the week ending January 11, 2014. This patient did not receive influenza vaccine this season. This is the first influenza death reported in the County this season. It is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older should be immunized.

A local man died in a Humboldt County hospital from H1N1 influenza related complications, the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services confirmed today.
The man ? who has not been identified but officials say was in his 60s ? died Monday and also had underlying health conditions, according to a county press release...
