Health Officials Report Record Number Of San Diegans Died During Last Flu Season

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An all-time high of 65 people died during the last "flu season'' in San Diego County, the county Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday.

The death toll topped the 58 who perished during the H1N1 pandemic three years ago.

Most of the deaths ? which occurred between July 1, 2012, and June 30 of this year ? involved elderly victims, and nearly all of them had underlying medical conditions, according to the HHSA.

The agency blamed a severe strain of the illness ? H3N2 ? which took even healthy people a couple of weeks to shake.

    Hi from FluTrackers!

When will your California Influenza and Other Respiratory Disease Surveillance Bi-Monthly Report restart for the 2013-14 flu season?

It appears that the last report linked on your webpage covers the period May 5-18, 2013. Is this correct? http://www.cdph.ca.gov/HealthInfo/di...d%20051813.pdf

January 5, 2014 (San Diego) -- Flu activity is increasing across the nation and San Diego is no exception.

While flu activity in San Diego has not reached the high levels being seen in some parts of the country, more cases are being reported here compared to the same time last year.

To date, 357 lab-confirmed influenza cases have been reported in San Diego. This is over 1.5 times higher than the 216 cases reported at the same time last year. The number of lab-confirmed cases reported this past week is 154, double the number reported this same week last year. The flu reports this year are still within the expected range.

During the minimal pH1N1 case count in the Northern Hemisphere's 2012 season and post-season, the US CDC demonstrated the experimental importance of Egg Passage strategies. Variant polymorphisms known to drive deep lung involvement in humans were surfaced repeatedly from quasi-species. That egg-based experimentation was considered valuable and was pursued throughout much of 2013, but evidently not to quantify the actual circulating pH1N1 viral population . . . because the production came to a full halt at the moment that the US flu season's high fatality rates became public due to an unexpected re-emergence of pH1N1 . . .

County flu cases drop, but deaths rise

Flu-related deaths continue to mount in San Diego County, as the virus burdens local emergency rooms and intensive care units and public health officials call for the unvaccinated to roll up their sleeves and get a shot.

So far this season there have been 12 flu-related deaths, the San Diego County Health Department reported Thursday. That number, an increase of five from the previous week, is almost as high as this time last season, which ended with a record 65 deaths.

Some local hospitals said this week that the elevated numbers of cases have pushed them to enact visitation restrictions to tamp down the spread of the virus.

A 27-year-old woman is one of nine people in San Diego County whose deaths are being attributed to complications of the flu this week, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) said Wednesday.
