Good article to learn more about the Schmallenberg virus.

UK meet Schmallenberg virus - Schmallenberg virus meet the UK

By Connor Bamford on Sunday, February 12, 2012

Still-born lamb after Schmallenberg infection. http://www.augsburger-allgemeine.de/i

Europe is currently experiencing an incredibly worrying outbreak of disease across hundreds of farms in the North-West and it has finally popped up in the UK. The disease - caused by a previously unknown virus - has been causing a large number of still births in cows, goats and sheep after it was initially found in the Netherlands and Germany. What is worrying about this is our economic dependance on this kind of agriculture - but should we really be worried?

Following this initial outbreak in Germany/Netherlands it was rapidly discovered to be present in Belgium, France and the South-East of England where it was most likely spread by the movements of infected midge flies. And even now, Russia has begun to close off it's importing of Dutch meat and animals. The rest of the UK is even bracing itself for further spread of the virus and now the UK's veterinary labs have weighed in on the research. But a number of questions still need answered before we can really do anything about it, which is why so much interest has been generated over the last couple of weeks, especially as we have probably only seen the tip of the iceberg.

Livestock disease misery: Price of lamb set to soar as deadly virus kills one in 10 animals

                    26 Feb 2012 15:07

The cost of lamb is set to rocket before Easter due to a deadly new virus that is killing around one in 10 of the animals.

Supermarkets face shortages due to the fatal Schmallenberg virus that has infected British farms after taking hold in Germany last year.
                    ...
In total, 74 farms across southern and eastern England have so far been hit by the virus, which arrived in the country in January.

At the worst-hit farms, the disease has affected around one in five - 20% - of livestock.

The Food Standards Agency has said there are not yet any fears about eating lamb, although little is known about the virus so far.

The Agency said: ?Any risk to consumers through the food chain is likely to be low. No illness has been reported to date in humans exposed to animals infected with Schmallenberg virus.?

                              "New virus headed to Denmark"

Danish cows, sheep and goats may soon be exposed to an unknown virus, resulting
                              in malformations in fetuses.

By Rasmus Boserup and Merian Garde Gras, Berlingske News Agency

                              27th February 2012

In a few months it has spread in countries like France, Italy, Holland, Britain and Germany.
Now, the so-called Schmallenberg Virus (SBV) is bound for Denmark.

                              - It can not be excluded that we will soon see this virus in Danish agriculture, says Stone
Mortensen, veterinary beredskabschef of Food Administration, told Berlingske News Agency.

Denmark for now has been free of the virus, but recently SBV was found in five herds in northern
                              Germany.

                              - We have not yet demonstrated that there would be infected herds in Denmark, says Stone
                              Mortensen.

The new virus was discovered in autumn 2011 and affects pregnant ruminants like cows, sheep or goats.
The disease results mainly in malformations in the fetuses that eventually will result in lambing
                              and calvings with stillborn animals.
