Homer sees first H1H1 death

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Office of Emergency Management was notified at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, of the death of a Homer woman from suspected complications of the H1N1 influenza.
In a release by Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies Board Member Michael Allen, Terry Shepherd, 45, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, at approximately 2:10 p.m. at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. Shepherd was the executive director of CACS in Homer. She was first seen at South Peninsula Hospital on Sunday, and was subsequently transported by helicopter to Anchorage Monday evening.
A sample to confirm the type of the flu has been sent to the Alaska State Virology Lab for testing and is days away from providing results.
