Re: Iowa Weeks 27,28 - No Activity- (41 total deaths)
Week 27: No Activity
One additional case of seasonal influenza A (H3) in a 3 years old female was identified in Delaware County this week. It has no apparent connection to the previous two cases of influenza A (H3) that was identified in Johnson County last week.
Week 28: No Activity
Two cases of seasonal influenza A (H3) have been identified in Johnson County by alert staff at the University of Iowa student health clinic. Though it is not unusual to identify a few sporadic cases of flu in the summer months, health care providers should be aware of the possibility for influenza infection in patients. These cases were epidemiologically‐linked to each other but the index case did not report recent travel outside of Iowa. Several states have reported travel‐associated cases of H3 including MN, MI, WI, PA, and HI.
One case of influenza A (H3) occurred in late August. CDC antigenically characterized this influenza A (H3) virus as being related to A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2). Both H1N1 and H3N2 Perth are in this year?s seasonal flu vaccine, as well as a B virus.
Influenza activity has remained low in previous weeks. The Iowa influenza surveillance report will expand as the activity levels increase in the fall. Other respiratory viruses recently identified in Iowa include parainfluenza 2, adenovirus, and rhinovirus. RSV has not been confirmed yet this season.
ILI: 0.82%(threshold 2.1%)
