    Flu cases rise
    Epidemiologist sounded the alert

    By Joel Ortiz Rivera @ elnuevodia.com joel.ortiz

The wave of infections with influenza-like illness that is seen everywhere in Puerto Rico could be complicated by the combination of seasonal virus and some strains for which would not be doing full tests for identification, as performed during the pandemic last year.

And, as has been palpable and infectious disease epidemiologist informally Angeles Rodriguez, could be that the Health Department of Puerto Rico faces a situation that has gotten out of hand.Rodriguez explained that after the high incidence of influenza-like illness that has served the hospital where he works, he decided to consult with other physicians to verify whether it was a widespread issue or just registered at your institution.

"The fellow (doctors) with whom I spoke told me that there are many influenza B, there is much more than the B of A. Also told me that coming out, which is type A, when you are tested positive does not come complete pandemic H1N1 last year, "Rodriguez said.

That is why Rodr?guez think you could have a greater presence of the virus AH3N2 or maybe even a 2010 version of H1N1.

However, the Secretary of Health, Dr. Concepci?n Longo Qui?ones said yesterday that there are currently no country in the influenza epidemic conditions and said the current numbers of ILI are consistent with the number of cases reported annually to the season.

Flu season occurs between October and March.

"The monitoring is being carried. Since September and early October are with us ILI, as in other years, and the curve of reported cases has been a cut above the usual average level, but is nowhere near epidemic level, "said Qui?ones Longo.

But he confirmed that in cases reported to Health after 25 October if there is an increase and predominance of cases of influenza B on A.
He recalled also that what we have always known as "monga" is the result of infection with influenza viruses.

The doctor noted that due to the outbreak of the H1N1 virus last year, people are much more educated and aware of these diseases, and appealed to the same rules and precautions to be used for emergency use that now.

These were hand washing with soap every two hours, use hand sanitizer, covering your mouth when sneezing or coughing and avoid going to work or school if you have the disease or symptoms.

But most of all, getting on time.
Longo Qui?ones, said the vaccine viruses 2010 season covering the influenza B and H1N1 and H3N2 type of influenza virus A.
