Zimbabwe: Harare Still to Contain Typhoid
By Jennifer Dube, 8 April 2012

Cases of typhoid are still being reported in Harare's high-density suburbs every day since the outbreak of the disease last year.

Head of Harare's two infectious disease hospitals, Beatrice and Wilkins, Clemence Duri said most of the cases were emanating from Dzivarasekwa and Kuwadzana high-density suburbs, areas which always experience frequent water cuts.

"As of the 1st of January, we were receiving 90 cases per day in Dzivarasekwa and Kuwadzana which were the highest number of cases but now we are getting less than 20," Duri said. "Admissions are now very few compared to January. We have since adopted a preventive strategy because of the risk that it can spread to other areas."

More than 4 000 cases of typhoid have been recorded in Harare since October last year while nearly 1 000 people have been treated for dysentery in the past two months...

13 fresh cases of typhoid have been reported in Chegutu where the local authority has been slammed for failing for provide fresh water. The disease is spread through contaminated water and, like its bacterial cousin cholera, can be deadly.

Typhoid cases have been reported in different parts of Zimbabwe since last year, with the worst affected areas being the densely populated suburbs around Harare?s centre, including Kuwadzana and Mufakose. That initial outbreak was then followed by more cases that were confirmed in Bindura, Mashonaland Central and Norton and Zvimba in Mashonaland West. More incidents have also been reported in Chitungwiza and Kadoma.

So far there have been two confirmed deaths from the almost 5,000 suspected cases registered across the country. But with the onset of the rainy season there are serious warnings that the disease will continue to spread...

Zimbabwe: Five Deaths in Harare As Typhoid Continues to Spread
BY ALEX BELL, 7 DECEMBER 2012

Zimbabwe's capital city remains on high alert because of the ongoing spread of typhoid, with at least five related deaths registered in Harare since October.

These latest deaths have been recorded mainly in the Glenview suburb where a fresh outbreak was reported in October, a year since the first outbreak in Harare in 2011. Residents in Dzivarasekwa have also been warned about an outbreak of the disease there, where the local clinic has been transferring about 15-16 people to Beatrice Infectious Hospital everyday since last week. According to a local residents association, the main bulk of the patients have been pupils from Nhamburiko Primary school.

Harare City Health Deputy Director Dr Prosper Chonzi said other new cases have also been reported in Mabvuku, Tafara and other suburbs that have no access to clean water.

"The fight against typhoid which began in the city last year is far from over as we continue to record fresh outbreaks," he said.
