    Fiji typhoid outbreak prompts public health emergency

    A typhoid outbreak in Fiji has prompted a Public Health Emergency for a village and a settlement in Ba.

    According to FBC News, the declaration was made by the Deputy Secretary Public Health Dr Joe Koroivueta...

    SIX people are hospitalised with typhoid fever as the authorities put in place a public health emergency order which restricts movement to and from, and activities within affected areas.

    The development follows a confirmation yesterday by health authorities of an outbreak involving 14 clinical cases of flood-related illnesses reported to date, more than a week after The Fiji Times broke the story.

    Koroboya village in the Tavua medical subdivision and Naitasiri settlement in the Ba medical subdivision were identified as affected areas within which movement is limited, said Health Ministry deputy secretary for public health Doctor Joe Koroivueta...

      A TOTAL of 15 cases of typhoid have been confirmed at Koroboya Village in Ba and nearby settlements.

      This was confirmed by Ministry of Health officials who have been living at the village ever since a public health emergency regulation was imposed last month.

      According to Ba sub-divisional medical officer Dr Luse Tinakoi, the 15 people were from Koroboya Village, nearby Naitarisi Village and people living in settlements outside the village.

      According to Dr Luse, the medical teams set up medical clinics and distributed tablets to the affected people.

      She said tablets were also given to children in schools and pregnant women.

      She said they were also monitoring any cases of leptospirosis and dengue fever...

        14 typhoid cases since January

        FOURTEEN cases of typhoid have been reported from the province of Bua since January this year, says divisional medical officer north Doctor Pablo Romakin.

        He stressed the 14 cases were not an outbreak as reported by other media organisations.

        "These are the total cases we have received since January and the reason why we are paying special attention to Bua is because we continuously receive typhoid cases from there," Dr Romakin said...

          Another village in Navosa is under siege from typhoid, a communicable disease that caused the hospitalisation of 29 villagers from the province last year.

          Navosa district officer Atunaisa Keve confirmed that nine villagers from Draubuta were admitted this week after testing positive for typhoid while another eight suspected cases were treated in the village.

          The Health Ministry's deputy secretary for public health, Doctor Josefa Koroivueta, confirmed the outbreak...

            There has a suspected typhoid outbreak at Ratu Kadavulevu school.

            Health Ministry spokesperson Peni Namotu says they are now looking into the matter while a ban is now in place on the sale of any food items within the school premises...

              A typhoid outbreak in Fiji has prompted the authorities to restrict movement in and out of Koroboya village in Ba.

              FBC News says this follows the flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Evan last week...

                Kava typhoid ban

                THE Health ministry has issued a 14-day kava ban at Navala and Koroboya villages in an attempt to contain the outbreak of typhoid.

                Ministry of Health national adviser communicable diseases, Doctor Mike Kama said the kava ban started yesterday.

                "Movement and gathering restricted by the Commissioner's office for Koroboya and surrounding settlements have started, while for Navala Village, the kava ban will start tomorrow (today)," Dr Kama said...

                  Authorities are trying to contain a typhoid outbreak in the village of Uluiloli in Tailevu after six cases were identified.

                  The cases which mostly involve women, are currently been treated in the village by medical officers...
