    Back to School Vaccinations

    Posted: Aug 11, 2009 10:33 AM CDT

The swine flu has given a whole new meaning to preparing for school.

Instead of just buying the usual uniforms, and supplies, families are now adding vaccinations to their back to school to do list. It's a measure medical experts say is needed this year.

Maranda Cormier is making sure her girls are fully prepared for whatever the new school year has to bring.

"She has all her vaccinations, making sure she's up to date on everything especially after last year's swine flu scare."

Some of Doctor Brent Prather's patients say they are not taking a chance.

"It is in the back of my mind, we'll do whatever preparation the school asks to do and if we have to get vaccinations with that, we will. This year is different because of the swine flu potential. So this school year we'll be giving the regular flu vaccine like we do every year but we'll also be trying to get as many children immunized against swine flu as possible" says Dr. Prater.

"Medical experts say it's extremely important you get your child vaccinated because if your child gets the flu, it could be too late."

Particularly for children who Doctor Prather says are much more susceptible to catching the flu or the H1N1 virus.

Prather recommends calling your doctor if you have a child with a chronic medical condition to learn how to care for them during a flu pandemic.

However, good hygiene is the first step to staying healthy. But with the risk of another H1N1 outbreak, these parents admit they will definitely be ready for the school year.

The swine flu vaccine won't be available until October at the earliest. In the meantime, ask your doctor about antiviral medicines.

Officials also say patients who get sick, including children, can return to school or work 24 hours after their fever breaks, instead of the full seven days previously recommended.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
    -Nelson Mandela
