    Several flu deaths have been confirmed in West Virginia, including a pediatric death in Jefferson County -- the first in the state since 2009.

    For children, the number of days schools have been closed this month may be temporarily holding down the number of flu cases in that age group.

    For example, students in Kanawha County have only been in school a handful of days since Christmas break due to the chemical leak and weather.

    McBee said the school closures have actually been "one of our saving graces" in terms of reduced opportunity for flu transmission.
