H1N1 cases likely at all local schools

It?s likely that all local schools have students infected with H1N1, health department officials told members of the Franklin County Board of Education Tuesday.

The Franklin County Health Department announced last week that it would no longer test patients for swine flu. Instead, it will test for Type A influenza, which could indicate either seasonal flu or H1N1.

?For the most part, if it?s flu, it?s H1N1,? said Tammie Bertram, director of nursing for the health department. ?I can almost guarantee you it?s in all the schools right now.?

The two-part H1N1 vaccine won?t be available until next month, but the health department has already starting giving seasonal flu shots to Frankfort residents. Bertram said clinics will be set up in city and county schools, private schools and day care centers.

Until then, she urged prevention measures.

?Right now prevention is kind of our only defense,? she said.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
