UNION, Ky. -- Nearly one-third of Ryle High School students missed school Tuesday, one day after one-fifth of students were absent.

School officials said nearly 500 of Ryle's 1,600 students stayed home Tuesday with a variety of symptoms, including a small number with flu-like symptoms, and a small number were sent home from school in the morning.

About 350 students stayed home sick on Monday, school officials said, up dramatically from the typical 3 percent absentee rate.

Many of the students were ill with a short-term virus that school officials said was going around, and a few teachers were also ill.

No plans to cancel classes have been made at this point, but officials said the Boone County School District could make that decision later.

An out-of-town band competition could be canceled for Saturday, but plans remain in place for students to attend.

Officials said they have considered canceling a Tuesday evening soccer game, but no decision has been made.
