Monterrey, NL .- The Secretary of Health in Nuevo Leon, Jesus Zacarias Villarreal P?rez, said that Mexico is prepared to face a health emergency by the avian flu called H5N1.

This variant of flu originated in China in 2005 and so far has only caused human infections through contact with birds.

"There is a risk of a pandemic, but the best way to prepare is with our infrastructure that will allow us to detect the earliest cases submitted, hopefully not this," Villarreal said Perez.

He said the experience with the human influenza virus H1N1 has left the country far more strengthened in their surveillance systems.

In cuantoa Nuevo Le?n said that it began testing a methodology that is what enables it to detect if it were to circulate the virus.

"Unlike the H1N1 that took us all by surprise because it was a new virus, there was no diagnostic methodology, H5N1 is now within the protocols of epidemiological surveillance. We are monitoring 19 respiratory viruses in severe cases of viral pneumonia infection in hospitals in the state, including H5N1. Fortunately has not circulated, "said the doctor.
