    Suicides top 30,000 for 14th consecutive year

    Some 30,513 people committed suicide in Japan in 2011, the 14th straight year for the figure to top 30,000 but representing a decline of 1,177 from 2010, the National Police Agency said Jan. 10.

    TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The number of people who committed suicide in Japan in 2011 stood at 30,513, surpassing 30,000 for the 14th straight year but down 3.7 percent from the previous year, the National Police Agency said Tuesday in a preliminary report.

    Chiba town mayor dead in apparent suicide

    CHIBA -- Takashi Saito, the 47-year-old mayor of the town of Yokoshibahikari in northeastern Chiba Prefecture, died Feb. 6 in an apparent suicide, prefectural police said.

        Three found dead in suspected murder-suicide

        KUMAMOTO -- An elderly couple and their son were found dead in a home in Koshi, Kumamoto Prefecture, on the night of Feb. 15 in a suspected murder-suicide, police have announced.
