    SITUATION UPDATE

    26/09/2013 As of 26 September 2013, 190 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 464 cases in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2013 transmission season.

    During the past week, 23 new cases were detected in the EU.

    Croatia reported three new cases, two from the newly affected city of Zagreb and one from the Zagrebacka county, an area with previous case reports. In addition, the city of Zagreb has been identified as the possible place of infection of three already reported cases.

    Greece reported three new cases from areas with previous case reports (Attiki 2, Kavala 1).

    Italy reported 13 new cases, six from the newly affected provinces of Treviso (4) and Venezia (2) and seven from provinces with previous case reports (Cremona 1, Mantova 1, Modena 1, Parma 2, Reggio nell'Emilia 1, Verona 1). The total of 59 reported cases includes 33 neuroinvasive cases and 26 non-neuroinvasive cases.

    Romania reported four new cases, two from two newly affected counties (Ilof, Mures) and two from counties with previous case reports (Braila, Ialomita).

    In neighbouring countries, 28 new cases were reported.

    Serbia reported 28 new cases, one in newly affected Zlatiborski district and the others from areas with previous case reports (Grad Beograd 20, Juzno-banatski district 4, Podunavski district 1, Severno-backi 1, Sremski district 1).

    In addition, in Montenegro the Bar region has been identified as another possible place of infection for the already reported case.

    In addition, the Andalusia Ministry of Agriculture in Spain detected on 19 September two other horses with West Nile encephalitis in the newly affected province of Huelva (view report)

      SITUATION UPDATE

      3/10/2013 As of 3 October 2013, 203 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 483 cases in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2013 transmission season.

      During the past week, 14 new cases were detected in the EU
      .

      Greece reported three new cases from areas with previous case reports (Attiki 1, Imathia 1, Serres 1). In addition, one case previously reported in Attiki was discarded after further laboratory investigation.

      Hungary reported nine new cases, one from the newly affected Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county and the others from areas with previous case reports (Budapest 3, Heves county 1, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county 2, Pest county 2)

      Italy reported two new cases, one from the newly affected province of Foggia and the other from the province of Modena, with previous case reports. The total of 61 reported cases includes 35 neuroinvasive cases and 26 non-neuroinvasive cases.

      In neighbouring countries, 19 new cases were reported.

      Bosnia and Herzegovina reported a new case in Tuzlansko-podrinjski, a canton with previous case report.

      The Russian Federation reported 12 new cases from oblasts with previous case reports (Astrakhan 8, Saratov 2, Volgograd 1, Voronezh 1).

      Tunisia reported six cases detected since the beginning of the transmission season (July) in five governorates (Gabes 2, Mahdia 1, Monastir 1, Nabeul 1, Sousse 1).

      In addition, the Andalusia Ministry of Agriculture in Spain detected this week four other horses with West Nile encephalitis in the province of Seville (two in the newly affected municipality of Utrera) (see report).

        SITUATION UPDATE

        10/10/2013 As of 10 October 2013, 219 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 509 cases in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2013 transmission season.

        During the past week, 16 new cases were detected in the EU.

        Croatia reported two new cases from the city of Zagreb, an area with previous case reports.

        Greece reported three new cases from areas with previous case reports (Kavala 1, Serres 2).

        Hungary reported two new cases from counties with previous case reports (Csongrad, Heves).

        Italy reported five new cases, two from the newly affected provinces of Brescia and Lodi (Lombardia region) and the others from provinces with previous case reports (Ferrara, Mantova, Rovigo). The total of 66 reported cases includes 37 neuroinvasive cases and 29 non-neuroinvasive cases.

        Romania reported four new cases, two from the newly affected county of Bacau and the others from Tulcea, a county with previous case reports.

        In neighbouring countries, 26 new cases were reported.

        Bosnia and Herzegovina reported a new case in the newly affected canton of Modrica.

        Israel reported three new cases from districts with previous case reports (Central, Haifa, Tel Aviv).

        Serbia reported 22 new cases from areas with previous case reports (Grad Beograd 11, Juzno-backi district 4, Juzno-banatski district 5, Podunavski district 1, Sremski district 1).

          SITUATION UPDATE

          17/10/2013 As of 17 October 2013, 221 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 511 cases in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2013 transmission season.

          During the past week, two new cases were detected in the EU.

          Italy reported two new cases from provinces with previous case reports (Treviso, Verona). The total of 68 reported cases includes 39 neuroinvasive cases and 29 non-neuroinvasive cases.

          In neighbouring countries, two new cases were reported.

          Montenegro reported two new cases in Podgorica, a region with previous case reports, one recent case and one older case not previously included.

          In addition, the Andalusia Ministry of Agriculture in Spain detected this week four other horses with West Nile encephalitis in three newly affected municipalities of the province of Seville (Cantillana, Constantina, La puebla de los infantes) and in a newly affected municipality of the province of Huelva (Nerva).             SITUATION UPDATE

            24/10/2013 As of 24 October 2013, 224 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 557 cases in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2013 transmission season.

            During the past week, three new cases were detected in the EU.

            Hungary reported one new case in Bacs-Kiskun, a county with previous case report. This case occurred in August but was recently confirmed as an autochthonous case.

            Romania reported two new cases in the newly affected county of Sibiu. For these two cases, the infection occurred in August.

            In neighbouring countries, 46 new cases were reported.

            Israel reported four new cases from districts with previous case reports (Central, Haifa, Southern).

            Serbia reported 42 new cases, three from newly affected districts (Pomoravski, Rasinski, Sumadijski) and 39 from districts with previous case reports.

            In addition, the Andalusia Ministry of Agriculture in Spain detected this week eight other horses with West Nile encephalitis in four newly affected municipalities of the province of Seville (Guillena, Benacazon, La Campana and Carmona), in a newly affected municipality of the province of Huelva (El Campillo) and in two municipalities with previous case reports (Constantina, Huevar).               31/10/2013 As of 31 October 2013, 226 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 557 cases in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2013 transmission season.

              During the past week, two new cases were reported in the EU, whose dates of onset are both in August.

              Hungary reported one new case in Fej?r, a county with previous case reports.

              Italy reported one new case in Brescia, a province with previous case report.

              In neighbouring countries, no new cases were detected.

              As no recent cases were reported in the EU for the last weeks, ECDC will publish its last weekly maps for 2013 on Friday 8 Novembe

                6/11/2013 As of 6 November 2013, 226 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 557 cases in neighbouring countries since the beginning of the 2013 transmission season.

                During the past week, no new cases were reported in the EU and neighbouring countries.

                ECDC publishes today its last weekly maps for 2013.
