Afghanistan reports first swine flu death

KABUL (AFP) - Afghanistan has recorded its first death from the swine flu pandemic, the public health ministry announced on Wednesday.

"The victim was an engineer from Kabul. He was working for a construction company," ministry spokesman Farid Rahid told AFP.

The spokesman said the man who died in a Kabul hospital on Tuesday had a "connection with foreigners" through his work.

The ministry said an Afghan woman who is currently on a pilgrimage to Medina had also been found to have the virus in checks conducted in Saudi Arabia. The woman comes from Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan, said Rahid.

The A(H1N1) virus was detected in July among American soldiers stationed at the Bagram military base, around 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Kabul.

The infections were discovered during a general health check-up among the troops at the base.

The UN's World Health Organization said last week nearly 5,000 people had died from swine flu infections since the virus was uncovered in April.

Most of the fatal cases have been recorded in North and South America, the UN health agency said.
