Re: Dem. Rep. Congo - 12 suspected cases (7 fatal) of hemorrhagic fever in Orientale province - Ebola Bundibugyo confirmed

Very interesting. So the outbreak is confirmed as the Bundibugyo ebolavirus, making this only the second outbreak ever confirmed due to this strain.

The original outbreak was in Bundibugyo district of Uganda, in 2007:

It would be interesting to know if there are any links between the cases in Isiro and Dungu. Having only 10-12 sporadic cases over nearly two months seems a bit odd.

Ebola outbreak in northeastern DR Congo kills at least 6

KINSHASA, DR CONGO (BNO NEWS) -- A serious outbreak of Ebola is believed to be responsible for at least six deaths in the northeastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, local and international health authorities said on Friday. It is unrelated to a deadly outbreak in neighboring Uganda last month.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said it was notified by the Congolese Ministry of Health of a suspected Ebola outbreak in the towns of Isiro and Dungu, both located in the province of Orientale which borders the Central African Republic and South Sudan to the north and Uganda to the east.

Three samples taken from two patients were taken to the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in the Ugandan city of Entebbe where they tested positive for the Bundibugyo species of the deadly Ebola virus. Authorities in the region have so far reported 10 suspected cases, including six deaths, of which nine were in Isiro and one in Dungu.

Details about the suspected and confirmed Ebola cases were not immediately released, but the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said the first case was reported on August 1, and additional cases have been reported since. But the country's poor health system and the remote but busy towns have worried some experts that the disease may spread.

The Congolese Ministry of Health (MoH) has convened a national task force to coordinate the response to the outbreak and is working with international health agencies. A joint MoH, WHO and Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) emergency response team is already in the area to conduct a detailed epidemiological investigation and case management.

An international team comprised of epidemiologists, logisticians, anthropologists and social mobilization officers is also being mobilized for possible deployment to the area. "Control activities that are being carried out include active case finding and contact tracing, enhanced surveillance, case management, public information and social mobilization and reinforcing infection control practices," a WHO spokesperson said.

The outbreak in DR Congo is unrelated to an outbreak in Uganda last month, where a different strain of Ebola killed sixteen people and infected up to eight others. Ugandan health authorities have said the outbreak there is under control, with no new confirmed cases since August 4.

The Minister assured that "soon these preventive measures will be applied, the faster the spread of disease will be stopped."

The last cases of Ebola have been identified in the DRC in 2007 in the region of Mweka and Luebo (Kasai Occidental), killing one hundred and sixty-eight people on four hundred patients registered in four months.

The Ebola virus causes severe bleeding, fatal in 50 to 90% of cases. The main symptom occurs after an incubation period of ten days on average, by a sudden onset of fever, accompanied by muscle aches, vomiting and diarrhea. If medical assistance is not fast enough, the patient died a few days to cardiorespiratory shock.

This virus was first identified in 1976 after the occurrence of major epidemics in Sudan and northern Democratic Republic of Congo. This is one of the rivers of this country who gave his name to that virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified over 20 epidemic outbreaks in West Africa since the outbreak of Ebola, seven of which have killed over 180 people.

At the beginning of July that the disease has resurfaced in Africa in Uganda. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ugandan authorities have identified 16 deaths during the month of July. President Museveni has also been broadcast on July 30 last audio message calling on his countrymen to be vigilant.

[Laboratory investigations conducted at the Uganda Virus Research Institute, Entebbe, Uganda, have established the causative agent to be the ebolavirus species Bundibugyo virus (BDBV). Consequently the outbreaks presently occurring in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo are likely to be independent events. The Ugandan outbreak is caused by the ebolavirus species Sudan virus and the DRC outbreak caused by Bundibugyo virus (originally identified in an earlier outbreak occurring in Uganda). Further information is awaited.

Machine translated from French (hat-tip Pathfinder). Actually, for the number of suspect cases (10-12), the number of contacts under monitoring (44) seems a bit low, perhaps as a result of the remoteness of the area. By comparison, the 24 probable cases in Kibaale resulted in over 400 individuals being placed under monitoring.

Eleven probable or confirmed cases of viral hemorrhagic fever like Ebola, with 9 deaths were reported in the town of Isiro in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), said Saturday the Minister of Health in this country, Dr. Felix Kabange Numbi.

According to the minister, said in a statement from the World Health Organization (WHO) laboratory tests carried out by the Institute Uganda Virus Research Entebbe (UVRI), confirmed the presence of strain Bundibugyo this disease in this city of 200,000 inhabitants.

Isiro, capital of Haut-Uele in Orientale Province, is located a few hundred kilometers from the Ugandan region affected by the disease in recent weeks.

A Ugandan official had said earlier this week told AFP that the epidemic was under control.

In the DRC, emergency crews mixed the Ministry of Public Health, the WHO, the Centre for Disease Control (CDC-Atlanta) and M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF) are working closely together on site, said the WHO.

According to the WHO press release, the Minister asked the entire population of the DRC to mobilize to deal with this epidemic, observing strict hygiene measures collectively and individually, and not eating meat of animals found dead in the forest, or to touch the corpse of a dead person of viral hemorrhagic fever.

86 cases of contact (virus) have been identified and that we should follow. It has not yet seen them all. In deaths, it is 9. And suspected cases, there is still work that is underway by the field teams to make a definitive list http://translate.google.com/translat...-%26ns_fee%3D0
