Italian tourist succumbs to encephalitis at SCB Medical College and Hospital

CUTTACK: An Italian tourist undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital died on Friday. Doctors claimed the 63-year-old tourist identified as Roserio Sebastiano Contiguglia was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition on November 26 with encephalitis. His condition deteriorated eventually and he died in the wee hours of morning on Friday.

Roserio, a native of South Italy, was a physiotherapist by profession and had come to India on a tourist visa.

"The tourist was admitted to the hospital with encephalitis. Later, he was diagnosed with septicemia. His condition was quite critical and he died of multiple organ failure," said a doctor of SCB, who was treating Rosario.

The child hailing from Siddharthanagar succumbed to the disease at BRD Medical College Hospital here yesterday, officials said today.

As many as 43 patients suffering from encephalitis are being treated at the hospital.

As many as 3494 patients of Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome had been admitted to different government hospitals of Gorakhpur and Basti divisions this year, of which 588 died.

I'm not sure that I agree with all of the conclusions in the above paper. The suggestion that the first, second & third cases could all be infected by the same mosquito is unlikely to say the least. The idea of human to human spread is unlikely. More likely, there is a large reservoir of the virus in pigs & wild birds leading to multiple mosquito carriers. In addition many of the cases are not confirmed JE and might be enteroviral in nature from contaminated water.
