Re: Indonesia - Kalimantan - 4 foreigners hospitalized for suspected bird flu or swine flu

Neither Ukraine or India has ever reported a human H5N1 case, and the crew of a ship is not someone who is involved in poultry raising, typically. But they would be living in close quarters to share infections. Also, both Ukraine and India have very high levels of H1N1.

IMO, this is certainly suspect as H1N1. I wonder if one (or more) of the cases is severe enough to make the Indonesian authorities suspect H5N1 for that reason. Also, given the cramped conditions on ships, other seasonal pathogens might be involved. We have seen "mystery flu" outbreaks on ships before, even before the Pandemic, sometimes even with fatalities (which we don't have here).

Obviously, there is nothing at this point to suspect a co-infection (bird flu AND swine flu, as opposed to OR), despite what the first article said.

While I agree it is probably Swine flu, the translator was not a problem this time. From the first sentence of the article at Post #1:

Empat warga asing yang bekerja sebagai anak buah kapal (ABK) di salah satu kapal asing diduga mengalami susfect flu burung (H5N1) dan flu babi (H1N1).
