  • Cook Island - Bacterial meningitis scare over

Bacterial meningitis scare over Thursday 30: Fears of bacterial meningitis spreading in Aitutaki have now subsided since no new case of the contagious disease has been reported in over two weeks.
The ministry of health activated a rapid and extensive response to three cases of the disease earlier this month after first a sick three-year-old girl was taken to Auckland?s Starship Hospital by air ambulance after arriving in Rarotonga aboard an Air Rarotonga flight. Then a 16-month-old toddler and seven-month-old baby were admitted to hospital.
The younger children recovered and were later discharged from hospital, while the three-year old is also recovering in New Zealand.
Hospital health services director Heather Webber-Aitu says there have been no suspected cases of meningitis in the country for over 15 days, so the ministry is confident the possible spread of the disease has been prevented. - HG
