  • Laos: confirmation of 2 deaths, 11 new cases, 275 cases thus far

Vientiane, Laos - Lao health officials confirmed six new swine-flu infections in a southern province where residents are still suffering from the impact of Typhoon Ketsana, state media reported Wednesday.

The ministry said another 11 people in Attapeu province were suspected of suffering from the potentially deadly H1N1 virus, the Vientiane Times reported.

Dr Inpanh Inthirath, the province's deputy head of the Public Health Service, said that after Ketsana hit last month, health officials had detected outbreaks of various diseases, such as water-borne illnesses, diarrhoea and swine flu.

The affected people were mostly students attending schools close to the Vietnamese and Cambodian borders, the Vientiane Times said.

According to the Lao Ministry of Public Health, with the addition of the confirmed infections from Attapeu province, the country's total number of swine-flu cases edged up to 275 with two deaths.
Swine flu has been detected in 11 provinces, including the capital, Vientiane.

The ministry warned that because the swine-flu virus thrives in cool weather, the disease was likely to spread in the coming months.

The cool season in Laos lasts from November to February.
