H1N1: More Cases And A New State Website

The vaccine may not be here, but the virus is. The South Dakota Department of Health surveys the state for H1N1 flu cases and Friday released new numbers. Last week 908 people were tested for the virus. 47 new cases statewide were confirmed and four people were hospitalized. Keep in mind, most doctors are only testing patients who are considered high risk.

There are now over 150 confirmed cases of H1N1 in South Dakota. The most new cases come from Pennington County. They're reporting 23 new cases. The state is also reporting school absentee numbers. In the south east part of the state 66 kids were absent from school, due to an illness. Across the state 152 kids were absent. However, whether those absences are directly related to the flu is *not reported.

Friday the state launched a new website that acts as a gateway for H1N1 flu. There you can find information for health care providers, you can download patient education materials on flu prevention and you can find resources for businesses and employers.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."

Re: South Dakota Swine Flu (H1N1) Case Counts

One thing to remember when you look at these relatively small numbers is that the whole state only has about 804,000 people.

South Dakota reports 5 more deaths, total now 9

The South Dakota Department of Health reports five new H1N1 flu-related deaths in the state, bringing the total to nine. Influenza activity remains widespread in South Dakota.

There are 421 new confirmed H1N1 cases and 73 people have been hospitalized because of the flu. Seventy-three percent of confirmed cases are in children 18 years old and younger and patients in that age group also make up 52 percent of the hospitalizations.

Four more deaths recorded (17 total) in South Dakota

South Dakota?s influenza death toll rose to 17 last week, even as other indicators of influenza activity slowed, the South Dakota Department of Health reported.

There were four newly reported deaths from flu-related causes for the week ending Nov. 7. H1N1 is proving especially dangerous to people with chronic health conditions and underlying medical problems, according to Secretary of Health Doneen Hollingsworth. Sixty percent of flu deaths have been people between the ages of 20 and 60, the majority of whom had chronic health conditions.

Flu-related hospitalizations fell to 19 last week, bringing the season total to 366 to date. School absenteeism rates because of illness dropped to 3 percent for the week ending Nov. 7. Of the laboratory-confirmed cases of H1N1 flu in the state, nearly 70 percent have been in people 19 and younger. Fifty percent of flu-related hospitalizations are in that age group, too.

?Influenza viruses, including H1N1, can cause very serious complications for those with asthma, diabetes and other chronic health conditions,? Hollingsworth said. ?We strongly encourage these individuals to ask their doctor for the vaccine or to come to one of the public clinics.?

Two more South Dakotans die of H1N1, bringing total to 19

                Jon Walker ? Argus Leader ? November 19, 2009

Two more South Dakotans have died of the H1N1 flu virus, bringing the statewide toll this fall to 19.

The report comes as communities dispense free vaccine to fight the virus.

The victims range from 8 to 96 years old, the South Dakota Health Department said. The median age for those died is 54, although 69 percent of confirmed cases of the illness are children 19 and under.

Five deaths have been in Pennington County, two each in Minnehaha and Shannon counties and one each in Brookings, Brown, Buffalo, Clay, Codington, Davison, Todd, Turner, Union and Walworth.

Free H1N1 vaccines are available this afternoon, first come, first served, in three Sioux Falls area clinics.

One is 3 to 6 p.m. at Falls Community Health Center at 521 N. Main Ave. Another is 3 to 5 p.m. at Brandon Valley High School and a third from 3 to 6 p.m. at West Central High School in Hartford.

Health officials said the vaccines are for adults 25 to 64 with chronic conditions, pregnant women, anyone age 6 months to 24 years, health and emergency workers, anyone who lives with or cares for infants 6 months and under.

SD Case Information (updated every Friday at http://doh.sd.gov/H1N1/surveillance.aspx)
                  • SD influenza activity indicators continued to decrease for week ending Nov 14 but activity remains Widespread. 89 new lab-confirmed H1N1 cases, 22 hospitalizations, 2 deaths (cumulative numbers since Sept 1: 1,926 cases, 388 hospitalizations, 19 deaths)
                  • Median age of deaths 54 years, range 8 ? 96 years; deaths reported in Brookings 1, Brown 1, Buffalo 1, Clay 1, Codington 1, Davison 1, Minnehaha 2, Pennington 5, Shannon 2, Todd 1, Turner 1, Union 1, Walworth 1.
                  • 69% of confirmed cases, 49% of hospitalizations, 5% of deaths younger than 19.
                  • Outbreaks may occur in waves of about 6-12 week time periods, over a year or so after emergence of new flu virus; first wave usually smaller; followed by larger ?peak? wave. Subsequent smaller waves can occur as well.
                  • US saw first wave of H1N1activity in spring 2009; currently in second wave of H1N1.
                  • Not possible to predict how long activity will remain high, when wave will peak and when activity will decline; even after flu activity peaks during current wave, other waves of flu activity may occur ? from either H1N1 or regular seasonal flu viruses
