    State's H1N1 death toll climbs to 21

    JON WALKER ? ARGUS LEADER ? November 25, 2009

Two more deaths last week to H1N1 flu have pushed the South Dakota total to 21.

One was Tyler Newville, 12, a Sioux Falls sixth-grader, who died Friday two days coming down with a low fever. His funeral is this morning.

The virus continues to target the young, with 69 percent of confirmed cases in residents 19 and under. The median age of deaths is 49, with a range of 8 to 96.

Lon Kightlinger, the state epidemiologist, said flu indicators declined last week, including a decline in absence from school.

Five of the deaths have been in Pennington County, three in Minnehaha and two each in Shannon and Todd counties. Brookings, Brown, Buffalo, Clay, Codington, Davison, Turner, Union and Walworth counties have had one death each.

Sioux Falls has no public clinics this week offering H1N1 vaccine. They resume for select groups from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 3 at Roosevelt and Washington high schools.
