Exposure to sick birds remains the primary source of human infection with Bird Flu. It is advised for people not to keep poultry or for people who keep poultry to keep their birds well away from home.

Health workers are expected to be more observant on influenza symptoms, such as fever, very high fever and coughing. Especially if they have found a patient who had contact with poultry or live in an area where bird flu was endemic.

In previous cases, the symptoms include stomach ache and diarrehea. If the person has these symptoms, immediately go to the local clinic to get first help, that is to receive Tamiflu.

People are urged to learn more about bird flu and to reduce their risk of contracting the virus by adopting clean and healthy behaviors:
      1. Don't touch sick or dead chickens. If you have had contact with sick or dead chickens, promptly wash your hands with soap and report the incident to your village head.
      2. Wash your hands and cooking appliances with soap before cooking. Cook chicken and eggs well.
      3. Separate poultry from humans. And also separate new poultry from existing poultry flocks for 2 weeks.
      4. Go to a Public Health Center or Hospital immediately if you have flu and fever symptoms after having contact with poultry/chicken. Do not wait more than two days, especially if there are many poultry around your house or you had contact with poultry

Indonesian man tests positive for bird flu

          Wed Dec 12, 2007 4:51am EST
JAKARTA (Reuters) - A Indonesian man from an area west of the capital has tested positive for bird flu and is being treated at a hospital in Jakarta, a health ministry official said on Wednesday.

Joko Suyono, an official at the health ministry's bird flu centre, said the 47-year-old man from Tangerang kept ducks at his home and had recently traveled to the cities of Medan in Sumatra and Pandeglang in West Java.

"Two tests have confirmed that he suffered from H5N1 and the agriculture ministry has taken samples from the ducks and is still investigating where he may have contracted the virus," Suyono said.

Contact with sick fowl is the most common way of contracting bird flu, which is endemic in bird populations in most part of Indonesia.

Mukhtar Ikhsan, an official at Jakarta's Persahabatan hospital, said the man was being treated in an emergency unit and was on a respirator.

On Monday, a 28-year-old woman, who also came from Tangerang, died of bird flu after being treated at the same hospital.

Indonesia has had 115 confirmed human cases of bird flu and suffered 92 human deaths, the highest number globally.

Although bird flu remains mostly an animal disease, experts fear that the virus could mutate into a form easily passed from person to person and kill millions.

                  Hat-tip to Commonground

The researcher: Be Careful Indonesia could Be Pandemik Burung
                  Flu

Surabaya (Antara News) - Chairman Tim of the Researcher "Avian Influenza" (AI) from the Airlangga University (Unair) Surabaya, Dr drh Chairul A Nidom Ms, warned that Indonesia could become pandemik (the source of the plague of the illness) AI or Bird Flu in the world if the government immediately did not take the basic step prevented him.

"Indonesia became the" AI" world champion with 115 people terjangkit the AI virus that 92 people among them died.
But the government did not yet carry out the step that was basic to block, he said to Antara News in Surabaya, on Wednesday.
In seminar gaps "guarded against Penyakit Avian Influenza, Demam Berdarah Dengue, and Malaria" in "Tropical Disease Center" (TDC) the campus of C Unair Surabaya, he raised Vietnam as the AI runner-up in the world of his only 46 residents who died.

"Therefore, if the government did not carry out the basic step, certainly Indonesia could become pandemik AI in the world."
Moreover the Department of the Health (the Department of Health) and the Peternakan Service (Disnak) still blamed each other, he said stressed.

According to the lecturer the School Of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) Unair Surabaya, Department of Health-Disnak need not blame each other, but precisely must co-operate each other, because of casualties's majority AI that died indeed were connected with the chicken.

"We have carried out the study in 274 AI viruses in Sumatra, West Java, Central Java, East Java-Bali, and Indonesian Timur."
From 274 viruses since 2003 to current, evidently had five genotypes namely A, B, C, C`, and D, he said said.
He said, the A genotype began to be in Central Java during 2003, afterwards in 2004 has had the A genotype in Samarinda (East Kalimantan) and the B genotype began to be in Sumatra during 2004 as well as the C genotype began to be in Java during 2004.
In "2005 began to have the" C "genotype in Java and North Sumatra."
The C` genotype was the development from the C genotype, whereas the D genotype was the meeting of the A genotype, C, and C`.
The D genotype began to be in 2006 in Papua and South Sumatra.
The C genotype, C`, and D were dominant enough during 2007, he said.
That was startling, he said, 10 percent AI virus from Indonesia enabled the spread has happened antarmanusia (Ind/CDC582/2006), but was difficult to trace the location of the virus.

The basic step that must be carried out by the government, he said, was the management of the poultry seriously and focussed the reduction in the poultry in RPH (the abattoir), not as it is now that enabled the chicken to be cut off in the market.

The "management" of the "poultry must like that get the subsidy from the government because the community or the chicken trader was not possible to be able to pay the reduction in RPH, so as the selling price" of the "poultry in the market will continue to," he said.

He considered, divides the vaccine as it is now into parts not was the solution because the poultry stayed wandering everywhere.
"That not the solution, but the project," he said in the seminar that also put forward the expert in dengue fever and malaria from Unair Surabaya.
The other basic step, he continued, was the government must carry out the management, so that all the poultry kinds are in the pen, good in the city and in the village.
"Possibly needed the pen subsidy," he said.

This is rather confusing. I see "Mut", "Mustang" and "Mutia". Are these the same person? If "Mut" was the woman who died, is "Mustang" someone different than the 47 year old man?

</td> </tr> </tbody></table> JAKARTA, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- A 47-year-old Indonesian man has died of bird flu, bringing the country's death toll from the virulent disease to 93, a hospital official said Friday.
The official, in charge at a bird flu-designed hospital of Persahabatan in East Jakarta who gave the name only as Zulsiah, said the man died on Thursday following three days of treatment for avian influenza.
The man had been treated in the hospital with fever, difficulty in breathing and cough since Monday, after he was shifted from hospitals in Tanggerang city on the outskirts of Jakarta, said Joko Suyonoanother, official from the anti-bird flu center of the health ministry.
Laboratories tests showed the man was positively infected by the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, said Suyono.
There were 115 infected cases in the hardest-hit country, with 93 fatalities. Although millions of chickens have been culled, the virus is now still endemic in poultry across the world's fourth most populous country.
Indonesia has grappled with difficulties in stopping the spread of the virus, including sprawling territory, the traditional way of raising chickens in the backyard and ineffective implementation of anti-disease regulations.
If the virus could mutate to a level capable of transmitting among humans, millions of lives would be put at risk and the world economy would suffer setbacks, experts warned.
