Thanks Commonground. I think the list is accurate based on the what we have seen in the news reports. Transparency is a little better in Indonesia than Pakistan.

Indonesia clears four of bird flu in cluster probe

JAKARTA, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Indonesia has cleared four out of six members of a family hospitalised with bird flu symptoms, a health official said on Saturday, in a case that has raised concerns over potential human-to-human spread of the disease.

It also comes as the World Health Organisation investigates a suspected case of limited human-to-human transmission of the H5N1 bird flu virus in Pakistan.

The six Indonesians from a small village in Banten province, just hours from the capital Jakarta, had been suffering from high fever after more than a dozen sick ducks died in their backyard.

Two sets of laboratory tests showed four out of the six admitted to a hospital in Jakarta on Friday did not have the H5N1 virus, said Nyoman Kandun, director-general of communicable disease control at Indonesia's health ministry.

"We are still awaiting test results for the remaining two to come out, but so far results have lowered fears of a cluster," Kandun said by telephone.

Authorities treat cases where family members living together show symptoms of bird flu with particular care since it could point to human-to-human transmission of the virus.

Although bird flu remains mostly an animal disease, experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily from person to person, triggering a global pandemic in which millions could die.

Indonesia has had the highest number of human infections globally with 115 confirmed human cases of bird flu, out of which 93 have been fatal.

The largest known cluster of human bird flu cases worldwide occurred in May 2006 in the Karo district of Indonesia's North Sumatra province, where as many as 7 people in an extended family died.

Pakistan said last week 8 people had been infected since late October, including a veterinarian involved in culling whose two brothers died. A WHO team has investigated the outbreak and international laboratory results on samples taken are expected at the weekend.

The WHO suspects there has been only limited human-to-human transmission in Pakistan, but international test results are pending, David Heymann, WHO assistant director-general for health security and environment, said on Friday.

He said no new suspected human bird flu cases had emerged in Pakistan since Dec. 6, signalling there had been no further spread.

Millions of people in Indonesia, a complex archipelago comprising thousands of islands and hundreds of languages, live in close proximity to poultry, keeping backyard fowl for eggs and meat and to supplement their income.

Since H5N1 resurfaced in Asia in late 2003, the virus has killed 209 people in 11 countries, according to the WHO. (Reporting by Adhityani Arga; Editing by Ed Davies and David Fogarty)

6 Indonesian family members test negative for bird flu

JAKARTA (AP): Six people from an extended family tested negative for bird flu Saturday after being hospitalized with symptoms of the disease in the Indonesian capital, the Health Ministry said.

The patients were transferred from the town of Serang to Jakarta on Friday after suffering from heavy breathing, fever and coughing for three days, said Nyoman Kandun, the ministry's director of communicable diseases.

"Samples from all six have been tested and came back negative," he said, erasing fears of human-to-human transmission of the H5N1 virus.

Indonesia has been hardest hit by bird flu since it began ravaging poultry stocks across Asia in 2003, tallying 93 human deaths, almost half the recorded fatalities worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

Almost all cases have originated from sick poultry, but experts fear the H5N1 virus will mutate into a strain that can pass more easily from human to human, possibly sparking a pandemic that could kill millions.

Serang, in Banten Province, is 80 kilometers east of Jakarta. (**)

This question is for one of the experts. When testing is done for H5N1, will this testing also find if there is another flu strain present...say H2N3 or some other novel strain? Would it detect it if it were a previously unseen clade of H5N1? These folks certainly seemed to have all the symptoms. (Question is...if it wasn't H5N1, what caused them all to fall ill with upper respiratory ailments at the same time?)

So one patient is still "suspect" because they can't reduce their fever. Suspect of flu burung?

So the others are no long "suspect", because they could reduce their fever, by treating them with Tamiflu. Thus, their tests have come back negative.

So......the one patients tests are still coming back positive?

In Indonesia, patients who recover are H5N1 negative. Its just a matter of time. That is why the case fatality rate is so high.

It is like testing for bacterial infections after antibiotics have been given, The patient tests negative, even though they were infected.

The best example for H5N1 were the cluster in Garut
