Notifications of dengue accumulated entered into the system are 31,946 across the country, from SE 01 to 33 (01/enero to 18/ago) of which were confirmed by laboratory results and / or epidemiological link 90.3% (28,838 cases), represented an incidence rate of 432 per hundred thousand inhabitants. It confirmed 62 cases of death from dengue fatality rate being 0.21%. (Table 2).
In 2012 we identified the circulation of serotypes DEN-2 and DEN-4, the latter only in Asuncion and Central to EW 13.

EW From 1 to 33, the number of hospitalizations with suspected dengue accumulated, totaling 5916 in all, of which were confirmed 90% (5319/5916). The highest peak of dengue bed occupancy was recorded in EW 17 (22 to 28/abr) counted against 779 hospitalized this week. From week 27, the number of inmates can be considered low intensity, less than 50 hospitalized a week.
Until press time, were reported in the SE 33 10 hospitalized with suspected dengue, being higher than that reported last week (7 cases).

The number of deceased entered into the system, to EW 33, together account for 138 of which were confirmed as dengue death by 45% (62 cases).
58% (36/62) had comorbid conditions and 32% (20/62) had a history of at least one confirmed previous episode of Dengue. (Table 6).
The fatality rate is 0.21% (62/28.838) considering the total of confirmed cases.

Dengue alert in Paraguay; SMS awareness campaign to fight mosquitoes

Paraguay’s Health Ministry announced it will appeal to SMS messages as part of the awareness campaign to help prevent the mosquito transmitted dengue disease which this year has already caused 70 deaths and thousands of infections.

The ministry said that given the extraordinary rainfall of recent weeks and forecasted to continue, January can turn into a “tragic” month if all necessary measures are not taken to avoid the proliferation of the mosquito.

The latest annual official report from December 14 indicated that there had been 30.143 confirmed cases with a mortality rate of 0.23%. Most cases are concentrated in the capital Asunción and the adjoining Central County where 40% of Paraguay’s population lives...
