Government officials commenting on the work of the Council of Ministers

Nouakchott, 04/10/2012 - Ministers of health, equipment and transport as well as employment, training and ICT commented on late Thursday afternoon, the work of the Council of Ministers held a few hours earlier.
The Minister of Health Mr. Hamady Ba Housseynou said to have presented to Cabinet a paper on fever Rift Valley in Mauritania.

The minister said that seven cases of fever have been recorded in the country causing 4 deaths including contamination by this fever has been established as a result of laboratory analysis while two cases showed healing while another remains under treatment at the hospital.

This is not the first time that the disease appears in the paysdit it, cases have been reported in Adrar in 2010 noting that among the causes of the disease, which is transmitted to humans via animals, high rainfall and lack of cooking meat efficiently.

He called on citizens to make the necessary examinations and as quickly as possible in case of infringement of this disease because, he says, this is the only way to isolate the disease.

The Department of Health says it is ready to intervene at any time. But the situation is much more difficult for cases that occur within the country due to lack of blood that is vital in the field to save the patient's life.

The current situation of the disease is altogether normal and should not cause panic because it is cases that are counted and there are no pockets of disease at national level.

A total of 24 cases and 13 deaths were reported from 13 districts

                  Event description

The Ministry of Health declared an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) on 4 October 2012. The date of onset of the index case was 16 September 2012. As of 15 October 2012, 24 cases (7 confirmed, 8 probable and 9 undetermined) had been reported to the Ministry of Health, including 13 deaths. Suspected human cases are being managed in the hospitals. The cases were confirmed by ELISA and PCR at the National Reference Laboratory of the National Institute of Public Health Research (INRS) in Nouakchott and at the Institut Pasteur in Dakar. In addition, 97 blood samples were collected from camels, goats and cattle for serological analysis and one tested positive. Mauritania experienced Rift Valley Fever outbreak in 2010.

                  Actions taken

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Rural Development are jointly coordinating the investigation and response to the outbreak. A multi-sector task force consisting of animal and human health experts has been re-activated to coordinate all the activities. WHO, FAO and other partners are members of the task force. The task force held their fourth meeting on 12 October, 2012. There is a strong collaboration between FAO and WHO at country level to support the multi-sector task force. The RVF response plan used to control the 2010 outbreak in the northern part of the country (Adra) has been revised and adopted to guide response operations. Guidelines and SOPs on RVF surveillance and case management have been disseminated to all the affected areas to enhance response activities. Animal slaughter houses are being supervised by the veterinary team. A multi-sector investigation team has been deployed to conduct a detailed outbreak investigation among humans and animals in the affected areas. An international team of experts will be deployed to provide technical assistance starting from 3 to 10 November 2012. WHO does not recommend any travel or trade restrictions to be applied to Mauritania.

                    Rift Valley fever in Mauritania

                    1 November 2012

The Ministry of Health (MoH) in Mauritania declared an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) on 4 October 2012. From 16 September 2012 (the date of onset of the index case) to 30 October 2012, a total of 34 cases, including 17 deaths have been reported from 6 regions.

The last case was notified on the 27 October 2012 from Magta Lahjar in the Brakna region.

The 6 regions include Assaba, Brakna, Hodh Chargui, Hodh Gharbi, Tagant and Trarza. All the cases had history of contact with animals.

In humans, 25 samples tested positive by ELISA and PCR at the National Reference Laboratory of the National Institute of Public Health Research (INRS) in Nouakchott and at the Institut Pasteur in Dakar. In the animal population, analysis conducted by the National Veterinary Research Laboratory shows virus circulation in several regions of the country.

A multi-sector task force has been jointly established by the MOH and the Ministry of Rural Development to respond to this outbreak. WHO and partners, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), are working within the task force to strengthen epidemiological surveillance in both human and animal health, strengthen capacity in case management at health care facilities, strengthen health measures in slaughterhouses, and raise awareness among farmers.

A multi-sector investigation team has been deployed to conduct a detailed outbreak investigation among humans and animals in the affected areas. An international team of experts will be deployed to provide technical assistance from 3 to 10 November 2012.

Mauritania experienced an outbreak of RVF in 2010.

With regard to this outbreak, WHO does not recommend any travel or trade restrictions be applied.
