Chinese Bird Flu Samples Hit US Shores

The US has received two out of the three promised bird flu virus samples from recent cases of the bird flu in China. The samples update the H5N1 virus so that they can stay on top of the virus with vaccines.

China?s Health Ministry stated that the samples are awaiting customs clearance. The samples are from a 2006 case in Xinjiang as well as a case in Fujian in 2007.

The missing sample is from a 2003 case in Beijing which left a 24-year-old soldier dead. Since 2006 five new human cases of the bird flu have been reported in China.

China has been very slow to share samples but has improved a bit lately. Samples could get more efficient after U.N. health officials tentatively agreed on sharing bird flu virus samples.
