China said an Internet outage that cut access to websites including those operated by Alibaba Group and Baidu Inc. (BIDU) was caused by a cyber attack, according to a preliminary report.

?The higher possibility could have been that the Great Fire Wall, the China Internet gateway, was using one or two domain name system servers and those servers were being contaminated,? Lento Yip, chairman of Hong Kong Internet Service Providers Association, said by phone. ?To be as massive as that, it might have been a single point of failure.?
