    One child has died and nearly 80 others have been affected by an outbreak of acute respiratory infection, in some cases complicated by meningitis, in Rostov-on-Don.

    Twenty-eight children from the Teremok kindergarten are currently in hospital, 11 with symptoms of pneumonia and nine with meningitis. One child died yesterday despite receiving medical treatment, ITAR-TASS reported Thursday.

    A group of specialists from the Research and Development Institute for Childhood Infections will today fly to Rostov-on-Don, about 1,000 kilometers south of Moscow, to assist local pediatricians who are treating the children...

    The number of children, who got infected in the kindergarten Teremok in Rostov-on-Don, reached 78. 28 of them were hospitalized, nine of them were diagnosed with acute meningitis, six children were brought to the intensive therapy ward. Other 50 children developed a light form of disease and are being kept at home under the supervision of physicians, health minister of the Rostov Region Tatiana Bykovskaya told Itar-Tass on Thursday.

    ?This figure is most likely not final,? she added.

    All 250 inmates of the kindergarten Teremok were examined by the doctors, they are undergoing the anti-virus therapy.

    The outbreak of the acute respiratory infection occurred at this kindergarten on June 5. According to the regional health ministry, the children were hospitalized with the diagnosis - acute respiratory infection, acute purulent meningocephalitis and acute purulent meningitis. One child died at the age of three years despite the treatment...".

      Slightly confusing statistics but this report gives a total case count of 159.


      "Enterovirus meningitis confirmed with 45 children in sthrn Russian cities

      MOSCOW, June 16 (Itar-Tass) - Physicians in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don have confirmed entorovirus meningitis with 45 people, a spokesperson for the federal Ministry of Healthcare said Sunday.

      A total of 75 children are taking a course of hospital treatment in the aftermath of an outbreak of viral meningitis in the city with a population of about 1.1 million people. ?All the patients /including the ones whose diagnosis has been confirmed - Itar-Tass/ are in a stable condition,? the spokesperson said.

      As many as eight children have been released from hospitals since Saturday afternoon. All in all, the outbreak has affected 159 people.

      Earlier reports said the physicians had confirmed the diagnosis of 38 children.

      The Rostov region public health ministry also said four adult patients with manifestations of an acute viral respiratory infection were taking treatment at a city hospital and one of them was a kindergarten instructor.

        Meningitis confirmed in 47 children in Rostov-on-Don

        Children's ombudsman Pavel Astakhov said enteroviral meningitis has been confirmed in 47 children in Rostov-on-Don.

        "Today, the number of children with confirmed enteroviral meningitis increased to 47 people in the Rostov region. Seventy-four children are in hospital, and another 76 remain under medical supervision as outpatients. In all, the virus attacked 165 children, including 11 from other district of the city. Medical authorities have launched anti-epidemic measures...

          ROSTOV-ON-DON, June 24 (Itar-Tass) - As many as 59 children are still in hospital with enteroviral infection and meningitis in Russia?s southern city of Rostov-on-Don, and 51 children have been discharged, a spokesman for the regional ministry of health told Itar-Tass on Monday.

          According to the spokesman, three children have been hospitalized with symptoms of enterpviral infection over the past 24 hours.

          ?A total of 55 children have been diagnosed as having serous meningitis, of which 41 are still in hospital. Apart from that, 35 children have been hospitalized with symptoms of acute respiratory viral infection. As many as 38 children are receiving out-patient treatment. In all, in the period from June 3 to June 24, as many as 185 children have been impacted by the outbreak of enteroviral infection and meningitis,? the spokesman said."
