Fourth death in Suffolk linked to swine flu

For the second time in two days, the death of a Suffolk resident has been linked to swine flu, the county health department said Tuesday.

A resident of the Town of Smithtown between the ages of 45 and 55 is the fourth death in the county associated with the H1N1 virus, Suffolk Health Commissioner Dr. Humayun Chaudhry said in a news release.

The man, who died Tuesday, "had been hospitalized since mid June for multiple acute and chronic underlying medical problems," Chaudhry said.

"We offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," Chaudhry said in a statement.

Chaudhry advised residents to protect themselves in an effort to help prevent the spread of the flu.

"We know this virus is not going away and people with underlying medical problems, pregnancy, or certain risk factors such as obesity need to be particularly vigilant about seeking medical care should flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath) develop," Chaudhry said in a statement.

A Town of Babylon man who died Monday became the third death in Suffolk linked to swine flu.

The man was between 65 and 75 years old and had a serious underlying condition and other medical problems, Chaudhry said. He had been hospitalized since June 4 with H1N1 flu.

So far, Suffolk has reported 117 confirmed cases of the swine flu, including two other deaths, both Brookhaven residents. One was a man between 35 and 45 with a serious chronic medical condition. The second was a woman with multiple medical conditions between 55 and 65.

In Nassau, which has 91 confirmed cases, one person has died - a young woman who had just given birth.

Lots of interesting things in that sentence. First, it would be easy to read that as stating that he didn't have flu when he went to the hospital and therefore developed there (no mention of his having gone to the ER with ILI, and the admittance was dur to other conditions). Secondly, he had multiple acute and chronic conditions. OK, so were they related? Were the acute conditions a colmplication from the underlying problem, or totally unreleated? Perhaps he did present with ILI, and the acute problems were some form of pneumonia and therefore unrelated to the underlying problem.
