Githu Muigai, the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination and xenophonia warned the UN General Assembly on Monday about the rise in racial hatred around the world.
He also noted that minorities in conflict countries, migrants, asylum seekers, and ordinary citizens continue to be victims of attacks based on their race, religion or beliefs.
Muigai told the Assembly, he was expressly concerned by the "deeply marked tendencies to characterize migration as a problem or threat to social cohesion.
He called on States to be vigilant against extremist groups and urged them to condemn or outlaw those that promote or incite racial discrimination.
