Here are some plans to build your own wood-gas stove. It's a project for assisting villagers in third world countries.
It has a high heat output and low carbon monoxide output. I'd advise caution, but it should be buildable by most, and fairly safe if people are prudent using it. It should be build as to be portable...once you extinguish it, it does smoke a bit.
It's not perfect but might save your life if you don't have heat this winter.
