Indigenous man dies after contracting swine flu

A man from a remote Aboriginal community in Western Australia has died after testing positive to swine flu.

It is understood the man died in an Adelaide hospital on Friday afternoon.

A spokesman from the remote community says the 25-year-old man had tested positive to swine flu but was flown to Adelaide for medical treatment for pneumonia.

A West Australian man has died from swine flu this afternoon in Adelaide.

The Aboriginal man is the first person to die from swine flu in Australia.

The South Australian Department of Health said he died from complications and underlying chronic health conditions.

The 26-year-old man, from the remote Western Desert, was being treated at an Alice Springs hospital but was moved to Adelaide for treatment on Monday.

A spokesperson from the South Australian Department of Health confirmed his death to WAtoday this afternoon.

It is understood he was diagnosed with swine flu yesterday

A PATIENT at Royal Adelaide Hospital suffering swine flu has died late this afternoon

The 26-year-old man, from Western Australia, was diagnosed with the virus yesterday and died today.

He is understood to have also been suffering other medical problems.

The death is the first from swine flu in Australia as the pandemic grips the world.

THE first death of a person with swine flu in Australia has been confirmed at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

A 26-year-old West Australian man, believed to be Aborigine, has been at the hospital since Monday in a critical condition.

The man was confirmed as positive for swine flu yesterday.

He was transferred to Adelaide from Alice Springs Hospital on Monday.

It is believed the man had other medical conditions.

South Australia's chief medical officer Paddy Phillips tonight said the man, who was transferred from Alice Springs to the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Monday in a critical condition, had tested positive for swine flu yesteray and died this afternoon in the hospital's intensive care unit.

The man's death is only the second of someone with the novel virus outside of the Americas.

"This man died with swine flu," Professor Phillips said.

"I understand it's only the second outside that region, but certainly this is the first person who has died with swine flu in Australia."

A spokeswoman for federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon tonight said the current "protect" pandemic phase which the country was moved to on Wednesday would not be changed.

AN Aboriginal man from WA being treated in Alice Springs Hospital has become the first person with swine flu to die in Australia.

The 26-year-old man died last night after being diagnosed with the virus on Thursday. Health authorities could not yet confirm whether the man died because of swine flu, as he had been suffering from a number of other serious health conditions.

The man had been transferred from Alice Springs Hospital to the Royal Adelaide Hospital intensive care unit on Monday. SA Health Minister John Hill said the RAH would continue to investigate the cause of death.

"What we do know is that this man was seriously ill from a number of conditions and the reason he was sent to Royal Adelaide because of those conditions," he said.

"How the swine flu interacted with those conditions and what's the ultimate cause of death is something we can't really speculate about."

SA Health's chief medical officer Paddy Phillips said he did not, as of yet, have all the details surrounding the Aboriginal man's death.

"Although the patient was diagnosed as positive for swine flu yesterday, his other medical conditions had dramatically deteriorated by the time he got to Adelaide," Professor Phillips said.

"We will be letting the Commonwealth know exactly whether or not H1N1 was a major contributor or not."

Prof Phillips said WA health authorities and the Commonwealth's chief medical adviser had been informed, and his death would not yet be added to the list of casualties from swine flu.

"This is very recent and while we have a large amount of information, we clearly don't have all of the information - that will require further review."

Prof Phillips said the RAH would work with the Communicable Diseases Branch.

He said it was incredibly unlikely the man could have contracted the influenza A (H1N1) virus at the RAH and staff who treated the man prior to him being diagnosed with swine flu had since been prescribed Tamiflu.

"All of the appropriate procedures have been followed," he said. "So I think it is incredibly unlikely this was caught in SA.

"Swine flu in the vast majority is a mild illness.

"We know from overseas certain proportion of people get so sick they need to be in hospital and, unfortunately, a certain proportion do ultimately succumb - largely people with pre-existing medical conditions."
