A 26-year-old woman from Western Australia has become the fifth Australian to die after being diagnosed with swine flu.

The woman was being treated for an underlying medical condition in the intensive care unit at Royal Perth Hospital and died late last night.

She had been transferred from another hospital prior to the diagnosis.

A spokeswoman from the Royal Perth Hospital says it is not known when or how the woman contracted the virus.

The woman's family has requested that no further medical details be released.

    Other cases

Late last night, the Victorian Department of Human Services was informed a 71-year-old woman had become the fourth Australian with swine flu to die.

A 50-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man, both from Victoria, have also died in the past week after contracting the virus.

Australia recorded its first swine flu-related death last Friday, when a 26-year-old Aboriginal man from a remote Western Australian community died after contracting the virus.

Western Australia's chief health officer, Tarun Weeramanthri, says it is important to remember that swine flu is a mild illness for most people but those with existing medical conditions or weakened immune systems should seek medical attention if they develop flu-like symptoms.
