The Ministry of Health yesterday confirmed the second death of a Costa Rican infected with influenza virus AH1N1.

The patient died in less than 24 hours while doctors installed artificial respiration.

Mar?a Luisa ?vila, Minister of the branch, said yesterday that the deceased had other health complications. She suffered from hypertension and morbid obesity.

The latter means that evil was between 50% and 70% more than the recommended weight, which would affect the lungs.

The person came to the hospital in critical condition and had no history of having been in contact with other infected Avila continued.

The Ministry of Health investigated the case because of the serious condition in which the woman admitted. Yesterday, the laboratory tests confirmed that women had the AH1N1.

She preferred not to reveal the canton of residence of the person or the hospital that served.

This is the second case of a Costa Rican who dies with the virus. The first was a musician for 53 years, who died on May 9 at the Hospital Calderon Guardia.

The man also suffered from other ailments such as diabetes and lung disease, which complicated his condition.

AH1N1 virus is a new form of influenza for which there is still no vaccine. The disease is caused when a microorganism that causes the flu from pigs to humans managed to enter.

The expansion of this virus has already received the qualification of a pandemic (epidemic that extends to many countries) by the global health authorities. The first cases were confirmed last April in Mexico.

Locally. The second died with the AH1N1 not traveled abroad recently or been in contact with other infected persons, revealed the Ministry of Health. "We know that the virus circulating in the community," said Avila.

Even tests were made to the spouse and children, who were not infected.

Although women AH1N1 the deceased had not yet been confirmed that she died because of this, the Minister said.

"A person can die with the virus or the virus. We investigated the patients, "added the official. Therefore, an autopsy was performed to the body.

In early July, Costa Rica will present their cases at a summit on the global pandemic in Mexico. There, doctors from around the world will discuss whether the deaths are caused by the virus or not.

Costa Rica has already confirmed 210 cases of infection, and so far, the mortality of the virus here has been mild, the Minister said.

However, Avila argued that the country should be kept on alert and people must step up measures such as hand washing and sneezing properly.

"Being a new virus and not know what will happen in the coming months, we must maintain a high degree of suspicion for if it mutates," said the head of Health, who added that the mortality is different in each country.
