                  Hong Kong: Close watch on outbreak of respiratory tract infection (8/3/09)

                  The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (August 3) called on members of the public and management of institutions to maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene to prevent respiratory tract infection.

                  The appeal was made following CHP's investigation into an outbreak of respiratory tract infection affecting 22 people including 15 residents and seven staff members in a residential home for the mentally handicapped in Tseung Kwan O.

                  The affected, comprising 7 males and 15 females aged from 26 to 58, developed symptoms of respiratory tract infection, including fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat since July 14.

                  Four residents have been admitted to Tseung Kwan O Hospital. Among them, a 42-year-old man is in critical condition and a 28-year-old man is in stable condition. The remaining two have been discharged.

                  So far, laboratory results of respiratory specimens taken from the four hospitalised patients were tested negative to human swine influenza. CHP's investigation is ongoing.

                  To prevent respiratory tract infection and influenza, the public are advised to adopt the following measures:
                  • to build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
                  • to maintain good personal hygiene
                  • wash hands after sneezing, coughing and wear a mask when developing symptoms of respiratory infections;
                  • to maintain good ventilation; and
                  • to avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation, especially during peak influenza season.

                  Members of the public, particularly children, elderly people and those with chronic diseases, should wear face masks and consult their doctors for medical advice promptly if they develop symptoms of respiratory tract infection.

                  For more information on the disease, members of the public may visit the CHP's website (http://www.chp.gov.hk).

                            Hong Kong: Report under paediatric surveillance programme (8/5/09)

                            A spokesman for the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health said that a new report involving a one-year-old girl was received today (August 5) through the paediatric surveillance programme set up by the CHP with private and public hospitals.

                            The girl developed fever, cough, runny nose and vomiting on August 1. She was admitted to the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on August 2. She is now staying in the intensive care unit in critical condition with complication of encephalitis. The nasopharyngeal aspirate specimen taken from her was tested positive to Influenza A. The girl was in good health in the past and has no history of travel. Her mother developed fever on July 30. She consulted a private doctor and has recovered. Other family members did not have any similar symptoms.

                            The Paediatric Surveillance Programme was set up in March 2008.

                            A total of 19 cases reported under the programme were related to influenza (13 cases in 2008 and 6 cases in 2009 so far).

                            Among them, 11 cases were tested positive for Influenza A and eight cases for Influenza B.

                            The spokesman reminded members of the public to stay alert by taking precautionary measures against influenza.

                            They are advised to maintain good personal as well as environmental hygiene and build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise, and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking.

                            More details of preventive tips on influenza are available on CHP's website (www.chp.gov.hk).

                              Hong Kong: Case of necrotising fasciitis under investigation (8/5/09)

                              The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (August 5) received a report of a necrotising fasciitis case (flesh-eating disease) involving a 75-year-old woman.

                              The patient lived in Wong Tai Sin. She developed fever and chills on August 3 and was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital on August 4. She was found to have right calf redness and swelling. Blood culture yielded Vibrio Vulnificus, a type of bacteria causing necrotising fasciitis. Her current condition is critical.

                              A CHP spokesman said necrotising fasciitis was a serious bacterial infection of the soft tissue and fascia. It could destroy tissue and cause death within 12 to 24 hours after infection.

                              People are reminded to adopt the following preventive measures:
                              • Avoid exposure of open wounds or broken skin to seawater or salty water;
                              • Wounds should be thoroughly cleansed and properly covered;
                              • Wear thick rubber gloves when handling raw shellfish.

                              Patients should seek medical advice promptly if they developed symptoms and signs of infection like increasing redness, pain and swelling.
