Russians Urged to Drown Swine Flu With Whiskey

(Newser Summary) ? Russian soccer fans visiting Wales next month for their country's World Cup qualifier have been told to avoid swine flu by guzzling whiskey, Reuters reports. The Russian government has cautioned fans to avoid travel to the UK because of the flu outbreak, but those who proudly defy the warning should "drink a lot of Welsh whiskey as a form of disinfection," said the head of a major Russian fan association. That "should cure all symptoms of the disease," he insisted.

"Russian fans don't fear anything or anybody so this virus will not stand in our way of supporting our team." The advice "is complete and utter nonsense," responded a leading British doctor, suggesting the Russian fans practice proper hand hygiene to minimize the risk of infection. "They are more at risk from depression when they lose the match than from swine flu," he added snidely.

"Russians Urged to Drown Swine Flu With Whiskey"

Likely as useless a remedy as the old wives tale mexican cure for the flu, Tequila.

I do have a take on this , though please don't take it too seriously. Not recommended for treatment except for those already inclined to consume hard liquor, such as Russian soccer travelers and mexican bar patrons) :

Maybe if u take copious quantities of hard liquor at the very beginning of a flu infection u might kill it off in the throat/upper respiratory tract before it moves into the lungs. Not a recommendation , just throwing it out there. Don't want to create a sudden nationwide epidemic of alcoholism.

My first thought was: "Won't vodka work as well as whiskey?"
My second was: "Oh, yeah, whiskeyed-up soccer fans...."

Actually, many still believe that whiskey is good for colds or flu. There are all kinds Hot Toddy recipes around.

Here's a link to one of our earlier discussions; they used whiskey a lot in 1918 for influenza.

the alco-vapours permeate the breathing air before it entering the lungs, and kills the bugs ...

maybe some effect came for the "stoned" folks, when the alco. starts to enter the cell liquids throughout the body, but than the danger come from the alc. itself

I've done that for years. Large quantities of Irish Whiskey and a nice long soak in a 104 degree hot tub. Colds gone the next day.

I hear that carrying bike chains and brass knuckles also helps ward off infections. And screaming insults at other teams' fans has been known to reduce cholesterol.

That's called social distancing; it would work with me. Can rum be substituted for whiskey?

LOL, you guys are so funny. However, I have felt better when I was sick when I had a bit of a toddy.

Maybe they should wash their hands with the vodka instead of drinking it

Thanks Mixin for the link, i bookmarked it and will add it to my growing arsenal of weapons for fighting the coming fall/winter flu pandemic.
I esp like that recipe for boiling/simmering 2 juices from fresh lemons and 1/4 th cup honey in saucepan, then adding either rum or whisky to the cooled down lemon/honey mix . Then sipping it in tea spoons like cough syrup. I will experiment and mix/ combine recipes this fall by using lime instead of lemon(lime is well- known in Mexocan culture as a cure- all for many ailments.) Also mix syrup with japanese green herbal tea to form a sort of mulitple layered viral /cold remedy.

I have often taken bowls of hot chicken soup with tons of tabasco sauce, red peppers, and lime juice added in, as another cold fighting resource.

My own personal remedy which i have used in the past and it has worked Ok for me:
Have that hot chicken soup doused with tobasco sause for dinner, Take a shot or two of whisky, take a hot bath, then wrap yourself in 10 layers of blankets and sweat out the cold overnight while u are knocked out . A tried and true ageless home techique for cold /flu fighting.

Noooooo, not raw garlic!! And yes, that would work quite well.

I don't know if whiskey works for flu but I do wonder if drinking alcohol can lessen a cold infection. If the virus attaches to the tonsil/throat area, maybe the alcohol can at least kill some of the virus?

Ming's suggestion of using vodak as a hand sanitizer: it doesn't have a high enough alcohol content. Everclear would work, though; it's 190 proof (95% alcohol by volume).

I didn't think they would need any encouraging. Sounds as though many of our members don't either!

Could one of you guys post an anonymous story about beer killing the H1N1 virus? That way I could show it to my ole lady and we would all be happy!
