First swine flu fatality reported in Pinellas
Published: August 10, 2009
Pinellas County has its first official swine flu-related death.
The patient was a 36-year-old man and, as with many of the swine flu fatalities, had an underlying health condition. The Pinellas County Health department has not identified him.
"We extend our deepest sympathies to family and friends for their loss," said Dr. Claude Dharamraj, director of the Pinellas County Health Department, in a written statement.
Florida has had 41 laboratory-confirmed deaths attributed to the H1N1 (Swine) flu virus as of Aug. 5. That number has been increasing more rapidly in the last few weeks; the state only had 31 confirmed deaths as of July 26.
So far, four deaths in Hillsborough County have been confirmed to be related to the swine flu, including two last week.
