U.S. Fatalities - Updated 4/10 - FT Total - 3,477
I can't do appleblossom's detailed list justice and we've gotten behind on the database, so I thought I'd toss out my state-by-state tally. No details, just the totals. If I am short any, please let me know. I haven't gotten any new information out of Texas or New York in a long time and our number is now very close to the CDC's number, so I'm sure that we are at least 10% behind the current number, based on a comparison of FT vs CDC tallies when the states were less stingy with their information.
Also, if you see stories reporting deaths in the U.S., please feel free to post them. We need all the help we can get. I've followed appleblossom's protocol with respect to reporting the deaths in the states where they occurred. Thus, the AK death is reported in WA, one PA death is reported in FL, and one TX death is reported in CA.

Re: U.S. Tally Novel H1H1 - Updated September 4 - Total 644
Here in South Dakota we have been blessed to have had very low hospitalizations and no deaths at this time. But as things are becoming more serious here, our SD DOH has chosen to no longer issue even their pathetically inaccurate counts of hospitalizations and deaths in the state. They have also indicated that schools that have cases of H1N1 will not be sharing that information with parents, staff, or students unless things should become serious enough to close a school, which they are very much opposed to.
I am so angry!

Re: U.S. Tally Novel H1H1 - Updated September 4 - Total 644
For what it's worth, this is the latest tally in the U.S.; however, given the fact that with the new reporting format provided by the CDC and a potential overlap of three days, and given that their total is on the order of 100 more deaths that our count, I really don't know what the real numbers are.

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 9/23 - FT Total - 761, CDC Total - 957
Since the CDC implemented the new protocol for reporting deaths, our count has been significantly behind the CDC's, which means many deaths are not being reported in the media or the state departments of health. Also, a number of states have stopped reporting total deaths on their websites and have reverted back to weekly surveillance reporting. Under normal circumstances, influenza deaths are not reportable, unless it is a minor, so few of the state surveillance reports include adult fatalities, but some do report pediatric deaths.
The ratio of laboratory-confirmed deaths to those falling under the category of "Influenza and Pneumonia Syndrome" reported by the CDC is about 1 to 4, based on data reported by the CDC over the past two weeks. If that ratio is applied to the 593 laboratory-confirmed deaths reported through 8/30, the total deaths directly attributable to H1N1 in the U.S. could be as high as 3,000 - 4,000 through 9/15.
Although the FT count will likely be well behind the CDC count under the new protocol, I will continue to track and report state-by-state fatalities on a periodic basis.
He is my count through noon today:
Alabama 7
Alaska 4
Arizona 22
Arkansas 5
California 202

I took these totals, plotted them at weekly intervals and calculated the percentage increase from week to week. Scary stuff if you then project through the rest of the flu season. Of course, those October numbers most likely just indicate a current wave, which, hopefully will ebb before the mid-winter wave we usually see in Jan/Feb/March.
If there is no ebb, and the weekly percentage keeps increasing....don't even want to think about that.

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 11/28 - FT Total - 2,449
The U.S. total for this week is an undercount due to the Thanksgiving holiday; therefore, I don't know if there really was a decrease in deaths reported per day. Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Maryland, Montana, NYC, South Dakota, and Texas didn't report deaths for Week 46. Michigan, Oregon, and Pennsylvania were providing daily updates and last updated on Wednesday. At the end of next week we'll have to add deaths reported over two weeks together and divide by 14 to get a more accurate daily rate. Flu activity has been decreasing in most regions, but given that deaths lag illnesses, the elevated numbers of deaths reported could go into December.

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 12/5 - FT Total - 2,631
Although the number of deaths per day slightly increased, quite a few deaths reported this week were from Week 46 and were not reported last week due to the holiday. So, the number for Week 46 was probably higher and the number for Week 47 was likely lower, which is means that he number of deaths have decreased two weeks in a row. Coupled with the dramatic drop in %ILI, this is great news. This fall wave could have been so much worse.
My hope and prayer is that before the next wave begins, the number of people with immunity - either from having had H1N1, or having been vaccinated - will reduce the length and severity of the next wave.
I still have some serious concerns about California, which seems to have experienced a long, steady death rate, starting in the summer. There has not been the same decrease in deaths in California as the rest of the U.S. In fact, California represents ~12% of the U.S. population, but has ~18% of the deaths.

Due to the back-to-back Friday holidays, a number of states only have data current through Week 50 (week ending 12/19). As a result, the number of deaths reported over the next week might include quite a few that occurred over the past two weeks.

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 1/15 - FT Total - 3,107
Probably a coincidence, but the number of deaths per day is exactly the same as the over the six-day period from 8/26 to 9/1, a week or two after school started. Here we are again - a week or two after school started.
Date - FT Total - Deaths per day

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 2/5 - FT Total - 3,229
The number of H1N1 deaths reported went down significantly this week. However, others report an increase in P&I deaths, so it's hard to tell how accurate my numbers are at this point.
I have high hopes that we've seen the last of this, but public interest and media reporting seem to be at an all-time low. Some state health department sites aren't updating weekly anymore and some haven't updated their sites in over a month.
