Volusia reports second swine flu death

Another Volusia County resident has died from swine flu, also called the H1N1 virus, state health officials said today.
This brings the number of swine flu deaths in Volusia County to two since the virus was discovered in Mexico last April.
The latest victim, a 50-year-old man, was not identified and health officials declined to say where he lived.
The first death, on June 23, was a 55-year-old man who was hospitalized at Florida Hospital DeLand. The man's attending physician did not immediately call it a swine flu death, because the man had a chronic medical condition. But it gets ruled a death from this flu when it's determined that the virus was present at the time of death.
Fifty-nine Floridians' deaths have been confirmed swine flu deaths, as of today. That number is expected to be updated to include the latest Volusia death later today. Nationally, there have been 477 swine flu deaths for the week ending Aug. 8, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.
