One new death in San Diego - total 17

SAN DIEGO -- Another death in San Diego County has been linked to the swine flu pandemic, bringing the total number of fatal cases in the region to 17, health officials announced Wednesday.

The victim was a 57-year-old woman with underlying medical conditions, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.

So far, there have been 1,053 confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza in San Diego County, including the 17 deaths, according to the HHSA.

Merced County records first swine flu death

MERCED, Calif.?Merced County has recorded its first swine flu-related death?a woman who had an underlying medical condition in addition to the virus.

County health officials say the woman lived in Merced but died at a hospital outside of the county. They have not released her name, age or other details about the case.

Merced County's health officer, Dr. Timothy Livermore, says flu cases this time of the year are rare, so most people who have the flu now would more than likely have swine flu.

California public health officials say there have been a total of 104 swine flu-related deaths in the state as of this week.
