  • The H1N1 situation in India August 2009 to July 2010

    Since the first fatal case in Pune on August 3rd, Novel Influenza A/ H1N1 has spread throughout Western India with fatalities reported as far North as Uttarakhand, as far south as Tamil Nadu, and as far East as Chhattisgarh. Cases have been reported in all 27 states and territories. As of August 28, there were 87 confirmed fatalities;

    Karnataka: 23
    Gujarat: 7
    Delhi: 4

    Uttarakhand: 1

    Time distribution:

    Aug 1-7: 1
    Aug 8-14: 22

    There were 27 cases with reported underlying conditions.
    Diabetes/High blood sugar: 8

    Cardiovascular:3
    Asthma/Bronchitis: 3
    Liver disorder:2
    Meningitis, arthritis, haemoptysis, HIV, Guillain-Barre, Tuberculosis, Malaria, Chickungunya: 1 each.

          As we all feared, I expect that we will see a much higher number of deaths in less developed countries. For a crude comparison among some other countries, see:

          Brazil reported the first 2009 H1N1 death on June 28.


          and 61 deaths reported by July 28.

          137 deaths reported by July 15

            Sixty-nine of the 87 confirmed deaths occurred in two states, Maharashtra and Karnataka. The map below shows the geographic relationship between these two states in India.

                    September 4th Update: 124 New Cases
                    One hundred and twenty four new cases of swine flu were reported in India today. Tamil Nadu reported 33 while Uttar Pradesh reported 30 cases. The total number of cases in the country rises to 4488. Three deaths were reported - two in Karnataka and one in Gujarat. The total number of deaths rise to 114.

                            H1N1 continues to affect India with 954 new confirmed cases (total 4,488) and 36 deaths (total 123) reported in the week from August 29th to Sep 4th. As of Friday Sep 4, 39% of confirmed cases and 47% of all fatalities were from the state of Maharashtra. While the rate of confirmed deaths did not increase during this week, first fatalities were recorded in three states; Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

                              Cases and fatalities from H1N1 are beginning to accelerate in India. 1,308 new cases (total 5796) and 48 new deaths (total 174*) were reported in the week September 5th to September 11th. The first death was recorded from Haryana. The average age of fatalities has been dropping the past 2 weeks.
