  • Chile destroys 90K turkey eggs over swine flu, says virus' spread among the birds contained

    • By Associated Press 9:41 p.m. EDT, September 3, 2009

<!-- sphereit start -->SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) ? Chilean authorities say they have destroyed 90,000 turkey eggs since swine flu was detected in the birds two weeks ago.

Victor Venegas, director of the Agriculture and Livestock Service, said Thursday the outbreak in turkeys has been contained, but a quarantine will remain in place for two more weeks
    .

Swine flu was detected last month on two private turkey farms. Tests showed it was the same virus that affects humans, rather than a deadlier strain.

World health authorities worry a more dangerous and easily transmitted strain could emerge if it combines again with avian flu, which is far more deadly but tougher to pass along.

The Health Ministry says swine flu has killed 130 people and infected more than 12,000 in Chile.

The Chilean Food and Beverages Industry:
      MEAT AND POULTRY

Chile is one of the few countries in the world that are free from all major animal diseases that limit trade in animal products. This privileged sanitary condition ?together with a strict compliance with international standards and food safety regulations? allows the Chilean meat and poultry industry to achieve high quality standards and tasty natural products.

Chile?s animal health status is unique in the hemisphere and quite exceptional internationally. Chile is free from all major animal diseases, including Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). It is also free from avian flu and has stringent health barriers in place to keep it out.

Chile currently exports numerous pork, beef, lamb and poultry products to more than 50 different countries. Sales have grown in value from $86 million dollars in 2000 to more than $560 million in 2006.

Probably not necessary. Just refresh the investigation of the Karo cluster in Indonesia (A/Indonesia/CDC599/06(H5N1)). Grandma throws a BBQ and 10 family members are infected.

            that was H5N1,not H1N1.

I understand H5 vs H1, but if a virus can spread by handling food products that are tained, and H1N1 is a virus, then ....

And, I'm really not certain that all ten of the Karo cluster family members slept in the same room, but if you would prefer another example, how about the two men that were infected by simply plucking the feathers of a swan.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm going to be really careful about how I handle and prepare chicken and pork (or any other raw meats and eggs for that matter). Despite all the carefully worded assurances provided by OIE, FAA and the producers.

Perhaps we should all start eating buffalo or goat meat.

Alarm as H1N1 found in birds

Infection of turkeys in Chile by H1N1 virus has raised concerns that the pandemic virus may infect poultry around the world.

This has also raised concerns on emergence of a more deadly strain of the virus if the H1N1 virus mixes up with the bird flu virus circulating widely in some countries, the Food and Agricultural Organisation has warned. The Chile authorities had reported the pandemic H1N1 in turkeys in two farms near the seaport of Valparaiso. The flu strain detected in the poultry flocks has been found to be identical to the H1N1 pandemic strain circulating among humans.

Chile is the fourth country which is now investigating the spillover of H1N1 virus from farm workers showing flu- like illness to animals. Pigs were found to be infected by the H1N1 in Canada, Argentina and Australia.
