A resurgent swine flu is blamed for the death of a 9-month-old boy in Duval County.
The child died Thursday, becoming the sixth swine flu death in Duval and the seventh on the First Coast, according to a Duval Health Department statement released today.
This is the first report of a child's death from the virus, also known as H1N1, in the area. Also dead are four women, ages 26, 30, 33 and 43, and two men, ages 52 and 55.
The lone First Coast swine flu death outside of Duval was of a Clay County woman.
While the virus has been mild in most cases, it has been severe for some people, particularly those with underlying medical conditions, pregnant women and people up to 25 years old.
