Parents of Woodbrook Elementary students were alerted that a child had died from complications in the hospital. The child is Carson Raymond, a 9-year old in the third grade.

Carson had begun feeling sick a week ago and was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus. He lost his battle with the flu yesterday at UVa Medical Center.

However, Carson had a pre-existing condition that made him susceptible to the flu. He was hospitalized more than two years ago from Influenza B, the most common flu strand.

The doctors at UVa worked tirelessly to try and save Carson, his family says.

The young boy loved baseball and had a great sense of humor. Carson's blood work will be sent to Boston Children's Hospital with the hope that doctors can find out more about the condition that made Carson so vulnerable to the virus.

We welcome your comments on this story.

A third grade boy at Woodbrook Elementary School in Albemarle County has died and the swine flu may be to blame.

The family of the 9-year-old says he died Saturday after a brief bout with the virus. He became sick in the middle of last week with swine flu-like symtoms. The child had other medical complications and was especially vulnerable to the flu.

The boy's family credited the University of Virginia Medical Center staff with a valiant effort to save his life.

Woodbrook parents are being notified by telephone that they should prepare their children for a difficult school day on Monday and counselors and other experts will be available to answer questions and help the kids.

Woodbrook was hit hard by the flu nearly a week ago and parents had been asked to volunteer to help out in the school office because so many students and staffers were ill.

On Friday, a letter went home to all Albemarle parents, telling them of the school system's plan to offer free swine flu vaccinations but those shots won't be available for at least another week.

One other person in the Thomas Jefferson Health District died from the swine flu, an adult male. No hometown for that victim was ever publicly released.

Woodbrook has about 320 students and is located east of Route 29 in northern Albemarle County.

Umatilla County reports 2 flu deaths

Associated Press - October 12, 2009 2:05 PM ET

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) - Public health officials in Umatilla County say the swine flu is "highly suspected" in the weekend deaths a child and a middle-age adult.

Genni Lambert, administrator of the county's public health division, said Monday the pair were not related and both had serious underlying health issues.
She declined to release either person's name, age, gender or hometown. Both died at a hospital in Walla Walla, Wash.

Only a handful of Oregon residents have died from the swine flu since Sept. 1, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the state is 1 of many reporting widespread influenza activity at a time of year when it's unusual.

Harlem girl dies of H1N1 flu
By Donnie Fetter | Columbia County Bureau Chief

Name: Summer.jpg

A Harlem girl died Saturday of the novel influenza A H1N1 virus.

Summer Rockefeller, 10, died of complications associated with the new virus while being treated at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, said Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins.

No other locla H1N1 deaths have been offiically confirmed by officials.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors, 2502 Richmond Hill Road. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Members of Harlem Baptist Church, including Columbia County school board member Roxanne Whitaker, will hold a spaghetti supper on Nov. 5 at the church to help Summer’s family defray some of her considerable medical expenses.

“Their medical bill, I’ve been told, is over $3 million,” Mrs. Whitaker said.

Summer was initially treated at the Medical College of Georgia Children’s Medical Center, but later was transferred to Egleston, Mr. Collins said.

At Egleston, Summer underwent four surgeries and spent two months in intensive care, Mrs. Whitaker said.

During that time, her parents, Brian and Elizabeth Anderson Rockefeller, remained in the Atlanta area with their daughter, said Mrs. Whitaker.

“They (Summer’s parents) have lost their home and everything else due to them losing their jobs and having no money to pay the bills,” Mrs. Whitaker said.

Euchee Creek Elementary Principal Wanda Golosky said Summer, a fifth-grader at the school, suffered multiple complications from her illness.

Though the school isn’t planning the upcoming fundraiser, teachers took up a collection for the family in the past and have been asked to participate in the spaghetti supper, Ms. Golosky said.

Though Summer died in Atlanta, new state protocols require that the coroner from the home county of the deceased child be notified. Mr. Collins said that an Egleston nurse informed him of the death last week but that he had not received a death summary sheet from the hospital as of this afternoon.

Mr. Collins said it was the first novel H1N1-related death his office is aware of.

Columbia County Health Department Nurse Manager Linda Graves said her district office, which is based in Augusta, would keep track of novel H1N1 fatalities in the area, but the office was closed today for the Columbus Day holiday.

First detected in the U.S. in April, novel H1N1 is a new influenza virus sometimes called “Swine Flu.” Since the outbreak began in Georgia last spring, there have been 489 hospitalizations and 23 deaths, as of Oct. 6, according to the Georgia Division of Public Health. At least two have been in children.

As of Oct. 3, 37 states are reporting widespread influenza cases, including Georgia and South Carolina, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of the 19 pediatric flu-related deaths reported Sept. 27 through Oct. 3, 16 were confirmed novel H1N1 cases and other three were considered likely. At least 76 deaths in children are attributed to the new virus and 29 of those occurred since Aug. 30, the CDC reported.

Globally, as of Oct. 4, there have been about 375,000 confirmed novel H1N1 cases and more than 4,500 deaths from the virus reported to the World Health Organization.

Staff Writer Tom Corwin contributed to this story.

Family celebrates life of Zionsville girl
Updated: Oct 12, 2009 5:22 PM EST
Anne Marie Tiernon/Eyewitness News

Zionsville - A 12-year-old girl died last week after spending her life defying all odds.

Kate Farley passed away Friday night after contracting the flu. Her parents shared her miraculous story Monday.

"We knew she was especially vulnerable," said Kate's father, Michael. "She was born in 1997 with a genetic condition called Trisomy 18, which means she has an extra 18th chromosome."

"Children born with Trisomy 18 typically don't live to be a year," said her mother, Martha. "Ninety percent of the children born with it die before they are a year old."

But Kate passed the one year mark and kept going.

"She was a true delight. She couldn't walk, she couldn't talk and she was tube fed," Martha said.

Kate was the Farleys middle child and their only daughter.

"She loved touching people's faces. She loved holding hands," Martha said. "She had a way of connecting with someone through her facial expressions and her eyes."

Will Farley is Kate's big brother and Jack is the baby of the family.

"She is probably the happiest soul I have ever known, always smiling, very responsive," said Michael. "She laughed when you tickled her an she really brought out the best in people."

Though Kate was special, her life in many ways was normal. She attended school in Zionsville for ten years, celebrated the seasons and joined clubs.

"She was in art club, she was in a knitting club," Martha said.

"They were so accepting of her an so, even though she didn't really knit, but she was in the knitting club. So she really did have an amazing life," Michael Farley said.

Her death came quickly, after testing positive for Influenza A last Wednesday.

"Kate started by vomiting first and then she had a fever," Martha said. "She had enough complications going into this and I just don't think she had enough to get out of it. She didn't have enough reserve.

"She had a special set of circumstances that made her especially vulnerable to this," Michael said. "I know there are respiratory complications with any flu, but she was especially vulnerable on that front."

The Farleys are now planning a celebration of Kate's life.

"We didn't think we'd have her 12 weeks and we had her 12 years," said Martha.

"We miss her, but we feel so fortunate to have her as long as we did," said Kate's father.

Visitation and services for Kate Farley are Tuesday and Wednesday in Zionsville.

Farley typifies the patient that CDC officials want first in line for the H1N1 vaccine and seasonal flu shot. Medical professionals are acting conservatively with dispensing limited supplies of Tamiflu. While it may shorten the flue for a few days for a healthy patient, it may safe a life for the sick, elderly and pregnant, who are especially at risk.

Boulder County reports third swine flu death
Public Health receives initial vaccine doses
By Amy Bounds Camera Staff Writer
Posted: 10/12/2009 10:36:00 PM MDT

A third Boulder County resident has died from a case of the swine flu, providing more urgency as health officials encourage people to get vaccinated.

Doses of the H1N1 vaccine started arriving in the county last week.

"Our goal is for as many people to get vaccinated as soon as possible," said Nisha Alden, Boulder County Public Health's communicable disease division manager. "We want to get the most vulnerable people first."

After receiving an initial batch of about 2,900 doses of the FluMist nasal spray vaccine last week, Boulder County is providing the vaccine this week to children ages 2 to 4 at its immunization clinics.

The health department also is distributing the vaccine to more than 90 Boulder County health care providers, who should have the vaccine by next week.

The most recent victim of the H1N1 flu was a 4-year-old boy who died Thursday. He became ill with flu-like symptoms in September and was later admitted to Children's Hospital. He had mild underlying medical conditions.

The first Boulder County person to die after getting swine flu was a boy, whose age was between 10 and 17, on Sept. 15. That boy also had underlying health conditions that contributed to his death.

The second victim was a 40-year-old woman who died Sept. 28 at Longmont United Hospital and had "significant underlying health conditions."

Alden said more than half of those hospitalized in Boulder County for swine flu have been younger than 18.

As of Oct. 3, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment had reported 11 swine flu deaths statewide.

The vaccine is now only available in the form of FluMist nasal spray. Injectable vaccines, which can be given to children from 6 months to 2 years along with the general population, are expected to arrive the week of Oct. 19.

Boulder County's vaccine doses will be distributed to prioritized target groups. Health care providers are a top priority, along with children ages 6 months to 4 years, pregnant women, people who have household contact with children younger than 6 months, and children ages 5 to 18 with underlying health issues.

Next in line will be emergency medical services professionals, children ages 6 to 24 and non-elderly adults with underlying health problems.

Eventually, health department officials said, Boulder County plans to offer the swine flu vaccine at clinics in schools, at the University of Colorado and at the county's Public Health offices in Boulder and Longmont.

Children between the ages of 6 months and 18 years can receive the vaccine at regularly scheduled Boulder County Public Health immunization clinics.

Boulder County Public Health offers flu clinics at its Boulder and Longmont offices. Seasonal flu vaccines are available now, and H1N1 flu vaccines are available this week for children ages 2 to 4.

When: 1 to 6:45 p.m. Mondays in Longmont and 1 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesdays in Boulder

Where: The Boulder site at 3482 Broadway or the Longmont site at 529 Coffman St., Suite 200

4-year-old Tulsan's death may be linked to H1N1
Last Update: 8:46 pm

State health officials are trying to determine if a Tulsa boy's death was caused by swine flu.

According to a Tulsa Health Department spokesperson, a four-year-old boy tested positive for "Type A" Flu.

A lab sample has been sent to the State Department of Health for confirmation of H1N1.

The Centers For Disease control reports 81 children nationwide have died from the infection.

Because so many kids are getting sick with both the seasonal flu and the H1N1 virus, the children's dose of Tamiflu is hard to come by.

Tamiflu is a prescription medication both treats and prevents flu symptoms if taken with 48 hours of exposure to the flu, or the on set of symptoms.

Compounding pharmacies are able to take the adult form of the drug, and make into a syrup that can be given to kids.

Dr. Mark VanHolt is a Pharmacist at Saffa Compounding Pharmacy at 81st Street and South Sheridan. He tells 2NEWS the children's dose of Tamiflu is in short supply because the early onset of flu season, combined with the widespread infection of both strains.

VanHolt says, "The manufacturer is not able to supply it all. As far as that goes, the only way they are able to get it is through the capsule from and we turn into a suspension form."

That suspension form is a syrup. It's compounded with a collection of sweet flavors, such as cotton candy, that make it easier for children to swallow.

It's not produced by drug companies, so the only way parents can get it, it by bringing their child's prescription to a compounding pharmacy, such as Saffa.

Some insurance companies won't cover compounded medications. So check with your insurance carrier to find out if you are covered.

Due to the risk of side effects, some pediatricians recommend healthy children heal from the flu on their own, instead of taking Tamiflu.

H1N1 claims life of Zionsville girl
By Andrea Hirsch/Times Sentinel managing editor

Kathleen “Kate” Farley, a 12-year-old fifth grader at Zionsville Middle School, died at 10:20 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, after contracting the H1N1 flu virus combined with her existing medical conditions.

She died peacefully surrounded by family, said Kristy Parker, a spokeswoman for the family.

Kate had Trisomy 18, or Edwards Syndrome, a genetic disorder in which an extra chromosome is present from birth. It left her with three holes in her heart, and as a result, she used a wheelchair and an oxygen hook-up around the clock. She was unable to speak as a result of the condition.

Last week, the Indiana State Department of Health confirmed the fifth H1N1 death in the state. Kate’s death was not included in that number, and the state has not updated information since then.

Parker said although Kate did contract the H1N1 strain on Wednesday, Oct. 7, it was her Edwards Syndome that played a bigger role, making Kate more vulnerable to viruses.

“Her other health complications far outweighed (the H1N1),” Parker said.

Michael Farley, Kate’s father, said he picked Kate up from school on Tuesday, Oct. 6 after she felt ill at school. On Wednesday, Oct. 7, he took her to her pediatrician, where she was diagnosed with Influenza A, of which H1N1 is a strain. After Kate started vomiting on Wednesday evening, Michael knew she was getting sicker. On Thursday morning, he took Kate to Riley Hospital, where she was checked into the Intensive Care Unit.

“I didn’t realize how serious it was at that point,” he said.

Michael said doctors gave Kate an air pressure device that would help push air into her lungs. Although the machines were helping Kate breathe, they weren’t able to get her oxygen high enough to support her completely and her organs then started failing.

“We were starting to loose the battle and I didn’t realize how bad it was until 2 a.m. Friday morning,” he said.

Michael and Kate’s mother, Martha, then made one of the toughest choices they ever had to make: to not put her on a ventilator.

“We knew her life was limited and the fact that she made it to 12 is amazing,” he said. “She wasn’t supposed to live 12 weeks let alone 12 years. It just turned into a battle she couldn’t win.”

The survival rate of Edwards Syndrome is very low, with only 5-to-10 percent surviving their first year of life and less than 1 percent surviving to age 10.

Family members including two brothers, Will Sorrells and Jack Farley, were called on Friday, Oct. 9 to say goodbye. Michael and Martha stayed by her side all day and night. Doctors made her comfortable and at 10:20 p.m., she slipped away.

ZCS Superintendent Scott Robison, in a message to faculty, staff and parents, gave his condolences on behalf of the school board and the entire ZCS leadership team.

“Our foremost concern at this time is the extension of care and support for the Farleys through our thoughts and prayers,” Robison said. “Kate’s Mom, Martha, is a professional staff member for ZCS, and our staff joins the Farley’s network of faith, family and friends in offering sympathy and support during this time of profound loss.”

Monday evening, Oct. 12, Michael said that he and his family are doing as well as expected.

Through his family’s experiences, Michael said he hopes that people get two messages: If someone is sick, stay home and if you are a high-risk person, get the H1N1 vaccine.

“Follow the guidelines and just try to stay ahead of it,” he said.http://www.timessentinel.com/local/l...yword=topstory

5-year-old girl dies of swine flu in San Diego
Wednesday, October 14, 2009

(10-14) 18:38 PDT San Diego, CA (AP) --

A 5-year-old kindergartner from Otay Mesa died of swine flu, San Diego County public health officials said Wednesday.

The girl, whose name was withheld, was sick for 48 hours before she went to a hospital Saturday, where she died within an hour, Dr. Wilma Wooten said.

Dr. John Bradley, an infectious diseases specialist at Rady Children's Hospital, said the girl did not have any underlying medical conditions but was much sicker than most patients when she arrived at the emergency room.

She cried, passed out, and her heart stopped, Bradley said. Doctors resuscitated her, but she had a severe infection in her heart, the doctor said.

"Her heart just wasn't going to work anymore," Bradley said. "This was a very tragic occurrence."

Wooten asked parents to keep their children home from school if they have symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Schools and employers should also send home anyone who develops such an illness.

"This is a wakeup call for parents to get their children vaccinated," Wooten said. "We expect and anticipate more deaths will occur, not just H1N1 but seasonal flu."

The girl became the 24th resident of San Diego County to die of the H1N1 flu strain, officials said. Three non-residents have died and 332 people have been hospitalized because of the new strain, which has disproportionately hit younger people.

People with underlying medical conditions who experience flu symptoms should immediately contact their doctor.

The federal Centers for Disease Control says 81 children have died from swine flu in the United States, most with underlying health issues that contributed to the disease.

Monroe County child dies of H1N1
Posted: Oct 15, 2009 11:03 AM EDT

SPARTA (WKOW) -- Monroe County health officials have confirmed that young girl has died of the H1N1 influenza virus.

The 21-month-old girl was from Sparta.

The county would not release any more details about the victim or what lead to her death. But health officials emphasize swine flu can be especially dangerous for young children, along with anyone with a compromised immune system or a chronic illness.

The girl's death is the ninth in Wisconsin this year. Swine flu cases have been reported in 52 of the state's 72 counties. Twenty-six people have been hospitalized since September 1.

Associated Press - October 15, 2009 11:35 AM ET
CASHTON, Wis. (AP) - A family member has identified the victim of swine flu in Monroe County as a 1-year-old child from Cashton.
Family tell WKBT-TV in La Crosse that Aberianna Dunnum died Sunday. She would have been two in January. A funeral service is scheduled Friday morning at Presbyterian Church in Galesville.
The Monroe County Health Department reported a swine-flu related death in a news release Thursday, but provided no further details.
Swine flu cases have now been reported in 52 of Wisconsin's 72 counties and led to 26 hospitalizations since Sept. 1. The swine flu has led to two deaths this fall, including the latest, and nine this year.

The Horizon School Division issued a news release Wednesday stating that although a Wynyard Composite High School student tested positive for H1N1, Saskatoon Health Region officials have not conclusively determined that the death occurred due to complications from the illness.
REGINA — In an attempt to quell rumours and calm fears, the Horizon School Division confirmed a Wynyard Composite High School student, who had contracted the H1N1 virus, died last week.
The school division issued a news release Wednesday stating that although the youth tested positive for H1N1, Saskatoon Health Region officials have not conclusively determined that the death occurred due to complications from the illness.
"We would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family,'' said Horizon School Division communications manager Ken Sogge, who noted division administrators only learned of the situation a couple of days ago.
The teenage boy, who died Oct. 8, was the second student in the school division to test positive for the virus. On Oct. 5 the Horizon School Division issued a new release advising the public one of its students had tested positive for the virus, however, the school was never identified.
"These are totally separate cases,'' he said.
While provincial health officials and the school division have not released the 16-year-old boy's name, friends have created a memorial wall on Facebook in his honour. One posting on the social network claimed the teen died from H1N1 while another said he was stricken by severe pneumonia.
"We put out the news release, in preparation, because we anticipated people were going to be asking questions and there were some decisions that needed to be made. So we tried to get ahead of the game,'' said
The school division said it will continue following the pandemic influenza plan which is posted on its website (http://hzsd.ca) and will continue to follow the lead of health care professionals. The division is working closely with each of the health regions and other community partners in order to minimize the effects of the virus and implement immunization plans.
Schools in the division will remain open and will continue to operate. However, after consulting with the Saskatoon Health Region and the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association, the school division administration decided as a precautionary measure to cancel this weekend's provincial cross-country racing meet in Wynyard and a number of local events.
All school caretakers and maintenance staff have been instructed to step up cleaning and disinfecting high contact surfaces in their buildings and students and staff are reminded of the importance of handwashing and personal hygiene.
The school division is also recommending that parents who have concerns about their children attending school should seek advice from their family doctor.http://www.leaderpost.com/health/Sch...519/story.html

Laclede County teen with a potential case of H1N1 influenza died Thursday at a Springfield hospital, according to the state health department.

The girl, whose age was not released, tested positive for a rapid test of influenza A, which usually turn out to be cases of swine flu, according to Kit Wagar, spokesman with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

State health officials learned Thursday the girl began to have flu-like symptoms on Tuesday, checked into a Laclede County emergency room in Wednesday before being transported to anundisclosed Springfield hospital, where she died sometime Thursday, Wagar said.

Wagar said the girl was between the ages of 13 and 17. Federal laws prevent state officials from identifying the hospital, doctor or patients’ names or the patient’s age, Wagar said.

Wagar said state health officials were informed by local sources that the girl may have had other, underlying health problems.

“That is another reason we hold off and say we need to figure out if it was a flu death,” Wagar said.

Wagar said if it turns out the girl had H1N1 flu, a pediatric flu investigation will be conducted and a report will be sent to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“It’s very unusual” to have a flu investigation conducted, Wagar said.

Charla Baker, the administrator of the LaClede County Health Department, said her office was notified of the death around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Her office hopes to receive a written medical report Friday morning, she said.

“Our heartfelt sympathy is going out to the family,” said Baker.http://www.news-leader.com/article/2...1015051/-1/RSS

Girl who died didn't exhibit common flu symptoms

By Keith Darcé

When 5-year-old Alitza Ortiz Sanchez arrived at a local hospital emergency room last week, she wasn't suffering from some of the most common flu symptoms, her mother said Thursday.

In fact, Sanchez had been diagnosed with a urinary infection the day before by a doctor in Tijuana. She had a persistent headache and purplish swelling around her eyes, but no fever, sore throat, cough or runny nose.
We didn't think it was the flu,” said her mother, Itzya Sanchez, 29.
A test conducted after Alitza arrived at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego revealed that Alitza was infected with the H1N1 virus, but the results arrived after the girl had suffered the first of what would be four heart failures.

Alitza died early Saturday.
Sanchez and Alitza's father, Miguel Ortiz, were driving to Tijuana on Thursday afternoon for a wake. Most of their relatives live in that city.
Alitza will be buried there Friday, wearing a red princess dress from the movie “Beauty and the Beast.”
“For Halloween, she wanted to be a princess, so we bought her a new one” for the funeral, Sanchez said. http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/oct/15/bn15girl2173421/?metro

Houston Teen With Swine Flu Dies

Updated: Thursday, 15 Oct 2009, 9:42 PM CDT

HOUSTON -

The Houston Health Department reports a 16-year-old Dobie High School junior died of a confirmed case of the H1N1 virus. This brings the total number of deaths in the Houston area to 12.

The deaths cover all age groups. The latest one is particularly tough because it affects a whole school.

For weeks family members didn't suspect anything out of the ordinary. They believed Jose Sepulveda, 16, was just fighting an upper respiratory infection.

"He really didn't have any bad symptoms, just a dry cough, and to us we just thought it was his asthma," said Cynthia Sepulveda, Jose's mother.

But his mom soon learned there was something else terribly wrong. Around October 4th, Jose could hardly breathe, and his fingertips had turned purple. He wound up at Texas Children's Hospital. Doctors diagnosed him with pneumonia and eventually swine flu.

"While he was unconscious, asleep, we would tell him everyday all day we were there and that we loved him," said Sepulveda.

Wednesday night, her son died. The H1N1 vaccine wasn't available before Jose got sick.

"While we want to make sure people with asthma and other conditions are protected and taken care of, everyone needs to take appropriate precautions. This virus is hitting everyone pretty hard," said Kathy Barton, Houston Health Department.

Barton says people with underlying health problems should call their doctor to see if and when they can get the vaccine.

"Be persistent. We feel bad because maybe we should have taken him sooner when his temperature was so high," said Sepulveda.

Health leaders are seeing more absences among high school students compared with lower grade levels. In the days ahead they expect to see more deaths.

Sepulveda says her son loved animals, his church and his family. Funeral arrangements are pending.

4-year-old may be swine flu's latest victim in Fort Worth 8:25 AM CT

09:24 AM CDT on Friday, October 16, 2009

By CHRIS DELL / The Dallas Morning News

The swine flu virus may have claimed a second victim in the Fort Worth school district.

The Fort Worth ISD reported this week that a student became ill and last attended school on Oct. 9. The district did not identify the school or the student.

KDFW-TV reported the girl was 4-year-old Yeimi Sierra Reyes. The Tarrant County medical examiner's office said the girl died Wednesday but did not list a cause of death.

The school district said in a statement that it had no information regarding the cause of death but that custodial staff was sanitizing the school. "This step was taken strictly as a measure of assuring our parents, staff and students that we are mindful of their safety in all situations," the school district said.

KDFW-TV reported that Yeimi began experiencing flu-like symptoms Monday, including fever, chills and difficulty breathing. The girl’s family told the television station that she had no underlying medical conditions.

In September, a Fort Worth ISD student died of swine flu. The family of Chloe Lindsey, a 14-year-old at Leonard Middle School, said the girl had no underlying medical conditions.

On Wednesday, Tarrant County health officials reported the death of another swine flu victim – a man in his 50s.

Child Dies In Custer County, Flu May Be To Blame

The Custer County Public Health Department announced Friday they are investigating the cause of death for a child who died after showing flu-like symptoms.
Reporter: KKTV

The Custer County Public Health Department announced Friday they are investigating the cause of death for a child who died after showing flu-like symptoms.

Custer County health officials say the victim had flu-like symptoms last week, but they have not yet determined the cause of death.

In the past weeks, Custer County have had children and adults in our community ill with influenza like illness.

The Custer County Health Department recommends taking the following precautions:

If you develop influenza like illness, stay home and treat the symptoms at home. However, if you are at high risk for developing complications from the flu, call your health care provider. Those people at high risk include: children younger than 5 years, pregnant women, people who have cancer, blood disorders, chronic lung disease, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disorders, liver disorders, neurological disorders, or weakened immune system.

Emergency warning signs to look for in children include: fast breathing or trouble breathing, bluish skin color, not drinking enough fluids, not waking up or not interacting, being so irritable the child does not want to be held, flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough, or fever with a rash.

In adults, emergency warning signs include: difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen, sudden dizziness, confusion, or severe or persistent vomiting.

Custer County Public Health is making every effort to get everyone protected as quickly as possible for both the seasonal and the H1N1 influenza.

For more information about influenza, please call Custer County Public Health 719-783-3369 or the CO HELP Line 1-877-462-2911. There is also a link for H1N1 information on the Custer County website by clicking on the link below.

SMCISD: Student dies of influenza complications
By Anita Miller
News Editor

San Marcos — The San Marcos CISD is “redoubling its efforts to encourage flu prevention” following the death this week of a student at Miller Miller School from complications associated with influenza.

“Our heartfelt prayers and best wishes go to the family and friends of the student,” said Mike Abild, assistant superintendent for business and support services. “The entire San Marcos CISD family is grieving over his loss.”

The student died Wednesday, and on Thursday, a letter from Superintendent Patty Shafer was sent home with students.

“Let me assure you that the health and well being of our students is my top priority, and we are doing everything possible to address the situation,” she said in the letter.

The child suffered from pre-existing physical health conditions unrelated to influenza, the district said. "We are working closely with health officials to monitor the situation, and at this time, schools will remain open and operating normally," Shafer wrote.

“San Marcos CISD has implemented aggressive sanitation measures at all campuses since the start of school. District custodians are frequently disinfecting common areas such as hallways, lockers, doorknobs, keyboards, hand rails and school buses with recommended germicides,” the letter continued.

Abild said the district encourages parents and student to obtain seasonal flu vaccine and, once it becomes available, the vaccine for the H1N1 “swine” flu.

“We’re aware the county is currently out of the seasonal vaccine but we understand some organizations like HEB, and most physicians’ offices, still have vaccine,” he added.

Currently, authorities expect the H1N1 vaccine to be available sometime in early to mid-November.

In addition to the constant disinfecting, Abild said district personnel encourage “frequent hand washing and coughing or sneezing into your elbow or disposable tissue.”

“The death of a student has an impact on students and staff,” Shafer wrote. “School counselors are available to assist both students and staff members following such tragic events. Even if children are not in the same class, grade, or school, they can be affected. Please feel free to talk with one of our campus counselors should you have the need.”

She also encouraged parents to keep their child home from school “if he or she shows any flu symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills, and fatigue, and contact your health care provider immediately.”

Shafer continued, “Students who are ill should stay home until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications.”

The death is the first flu-related in Hays County this season.

Dobie student’s death related to H1N1 virus

By MARK FLEMING

Updated: 10.17.09
A 16-year-old junior from Dobie High School is the latest person from the area to be confirmed as having died from the H1N1 flu, often known as swine flu.

Pasadena Independent School District spokeswoman Candace Ahlfinger said the district got confirmation of the diagnosis Friday morning, though the student died on Wednesday. She said the county health department indicated there was an underlying medical condition, but did not specify what it was.

She said the student had not attended classes since Sept. 28, so it was unlikely that any other students had been exposed by contact with him at school.

The district has provided information about the death both through a message posted on its Web site and through an automated telephone notice to parents scheduled for Friday night.

Ahlfinger said this death comes at an especially difficult time for students at Dobie High School, coming about two weeks after the death of another junior, volleyball and softball player Gabby Romero.

She said in addition to the school’s regular counseling staff, additional counselors would be brought in from other campuses if needed to help students deal with the losses.

The information being posted on the district Web site reminds students and staff to stay out of school for at least 24 hours after the end of any fever, as well as reminding them the best defense against any form of flu is basic hygiene, especially frequent and thorough hand washing.

The district encourages parents of any students with special health vulnerabilities to contact their own health care provider to learn what precautions they need to take.

Chaves County girl dies from swine flu

Associated Press - October 17, 2009 8:25 PM ET

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A Chaves County teenager with underlying health conditions has died from complications caused by the swine flu.

The state Department of Health says the death of the 15-year-old girl Saturday brings the statewide number of swine flu-related deaths to 13 this year.

The Health Department did not indicate what chronic condition the girl had.

Health Secretary Alfredo Vigil says the girl's death is a reminder that people with chronic health problems should take every precaution to protect themselves.

6 of the 13 people who died had some type of chronic health condition that put them at a higher risk for developing serious complications from swine flu, also known as H1N1.

Missoula Infant Dies After Probable Swine Flu Diagnosis-NOT Diagnosis is Meningitis

A Missoula infant dies after a battle with H1N1 influenza and other infections. According to the family spokesperson, Conner Hainer-Zavarelli passed away on October 18th at 1:30 PM at a Seattle Hospital. An autopsy will be performed. We're told that, most likely, the H1N1 influenza will be a secondary cause of death. Doctors tell the family that Conner's body was working overtime to fight the Swine flu when another infection set in. We're told that infection is Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, or in other words, bacterial meningitis. That's when Conner's infection worsened to the point where he was life flighted to Seattle. We will continue to keep you updated as we learn more information.

--------------------------

A Missoula baby is fighting for his life in a Seattle hospital after being diagnosed with H1N1 influenza. The seven month old is now on life support. Conner Hainer-Zavarelli started showing flu-like symptoms last Tuesday and on Thursday, his aunt, Tiffany, took him to Community Medical Center. Doctors confirmed that he had the Swine flu. By Friday morning, Conner was vomiting blood and bile and had stopped breathing. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors had to resuscitate him three times before he was lifeflighted to Seattle. Doctors say that while he was fighting the flu, another infection set in. His aunt says before the flu, Conner was a completely healthy baby. The family is in desperate need of financial and moral support. If you would like to help, you can call Debra Dodge at 493-1297.

Hospital officials: Missoula infant did not die from H1N1
Missoula infant dies from flu complications

Reporting from KPAX in Missoula

Community Medical Center officials are stressing that a 7-month old Missoula baby did not die of the H1N1 flu, contrary to some media reports.

The infant died of complications from Type-A influenza. Conner Hiner-Zaverelli was taken to Community Medical Center last week suffering from flu symptoms.

Personnel then flew the baby to Seattle in critical condition on Friday night when doctors found that Conner developed a secondary infection of bacteria meningitis, which ultimately took his life.

Community Medical Center spokesperson Mary Windecker says tests came back negative for H1N1.

To clarify a story appearing in the Missoulian regarding the baby's death, KPAX never reported on air, or online, that the child was diagnosed with H1N1.

In fact, we chose not to report the initial story as early as Friday simply because there was not enough information about his illness.
