Swine flu death toll reaches 3 in Volusia County

    By ANNE GEGGIS
    Staff Writer

A 53-year-old female is the first woman and the third person in Volusia County to die of H1N1, also known as swine flu, the Florida Health Department reported today.

As of today, the deaths of 87 Floridians have been laboratory confirmed as swine flu-related since the outbreak started with the discovery of the virus in Mexico. The virus has not been as virulent as feared -- and has not exacted the same toll as seasonal flu traditionally does every year -- but it has stood out in the effect that it's had on adults in their working years.

There is some concern that it will re-emerge more strongly when the traditional flu season starts. Innoculations against swine flu are expected to begin in the area on Oct. 15.

The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Health officials suggest covering your mouth when coughing and washing hands thoroughly. If you are sick, stay home and call your doctor.
