Second Swine Flu death in Kern

    Last Update: 9:37 am

A second Kern County resident has died from Swine Flu, the health department reported Thursday morning. The victim is described as a 31-year-old man with ''with pre-existing medical conditions.'' His name was not released.

He was the 167th person to die in California from the flu, officially called ''pandemic H1N1 influenza.'' In Kern, 19 people have been hospitalized from by the flu so far. Last week, the health department reported the death of a 37-year-old Bakersfield woman from the disease.

The HIN1 flu is like the flu that strikes every fall. It is no more serious than the seasonal flu, but it is easier to catch. Like the seasonal flu, most people are merely inconvenienced by the virus, but it can be fatal when combined with an existing medical condition.

Kern?s first fatality came in a woman who was suffering from liver disease. The ''pre-existing condition'' of the more recent victim was not revealed.

?We expect that there will be more (H1N1) Swine Flu deaths throughout the United States and possibly Kern County,'' said Dr. Claudia Jonah, Kern County?s Health Officer. ''therefore, everyone should continue taking steps to prevent spreading and/or becoming ill with the flu.''

Residents can help prevent the spread of germs, she said, by practicing the three ''C?s'' of disease prevention:

    ? Cover your cough
    ? Clean your hands
? Confine sick people at home
