The New Mexico department of Health reported on Friday that it has confirmed the fifth death in the state due to the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu.

The department reports that the 58-year-old Bernalillo County man had underlying chronic health conditions that may have contributed to complications from the virus.

The four other people who have died of the disease in New Mexico were from Sierra, Bernalillo, McKinley and Los Alamos counties.

Three of the four had chronic, underlying health conditions including end-stage liver disease, pulmonary disease asthma and diabetes.

The fourth, a 21-year-old Los Alamos County woman, had no underlying conditions.

Fifth swine flu victim is Bernalillo County man

    Associated Press - September 25, 2009 2:25 PM ET

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A 58-year old man from Bernalillo County has died from the swine flu, the state's fifth death from the H1N1 flu strain.

State Health Department officials say the man's chronic health conditions put him at risk for serious complications that led to his death Thursday. Health officials had no other details at this time.

The state's four previous deaths from the H1N1 flu include a 45-year-old woman from Sierra County with end stage liver disease, a 52-year-old Bernalillo County woman with chronic pulmonary disease and a 48-year-old woman from McKinley County with asthma and diabetes.

A 21-year-old woman from Los Alamos County who died from the swine flu had no chronic medical conditions.
